City Responds to I-10 Freeway Closure in DTLA

The 10 freeway remains closed between Alameda and the East LA Interchange due to a significant fire that erupted in a pallet yard on E 14th Street near Downtown LA just after midnight on November 11. The fire rapidly spread, engulfing the yard, multiple trailers, and a second pallet yard located beneath the freeway. This closure has already significantly impacted transportation within the City of Los Angeles. In response, LA City Mayor Karen Bass has directed all City departments to develop plans for affected Angelenos and directed significant resources be deployed to assist Angelenos traveling during this crisis.

LADOT has been on-site since the weekend to facilitate safe travel and support emergency response and recovery efforts. Thanks to the dedication and professionalism of our Traffic Officers, LADOT crews, and engineers, as well as the cooperation of Angelenos, we will find our way through this crisis.

The freeway closure is expected to remain in place for the next three to five weeks and will continue to impact residents, commuters, and businesses in the area. During this time, we ask for the assistance of all Angelenos in reducing the number of vehicles on the road during this emergency. Please consider telecommuting, taking transit, carpooling, walking, or biking as alternatives to driving.

If you must drive, plan ahead and expect delays. Please follow these alternate routes to get to your destination. Remember to drive safely and heed all Traffic Officer instructions. 

• If you are bypassing DTLA, stay on a freeway. Take the 110, 101, or 5 instead.
• Coming from the East, exit 7th Street. Last chance to exit the freeway is at Mateo and Santa Fe.
• Coming from the West, transfer to the 110 for DTLA exits. Last chance to exit the freeway is at Alameda.

Public Transportation Improvements to Assist Angelenos During Freeway Closure

To assist commuters during the I-10 closure, LADOT is eliminating fares on all Commuter Express lines. Commuter Express provides long-range transit service from across the region, including lines departing from the Northeast Valley, Thousand Oaks, South Bay, and Long Beach. Buses run on set departure times and make limited stops for a fast and reliable commute. Find a Commuter Express line that works for you at ladottransit.com.

In addition to free fares on Commuter Express, LADOT neighborhood DASH buses remain free. Commuters can use DASH routes A, B, D, E, and F to complete trips around DTLA. DASH routes connect to transportation hubs like Union Station and 7th Street/Metro Center and run as frequently as every 5-10 minutes M-F. Learn more about DTLA DASH here.

Commuters may also notice improved travel times on Metro A and E lines. LADOT has adjusted signal times to enable trains to travel through intersections more efficiently. Metro A and E lines provide service to DTLA from Azusa, Long Beach, Santa Monica, and East LA.

Metrolink trains have increased service frequency along the San Bernadino line to help Angelenos get to and from DTLA.

Finally, Metro's The Source blog has compiled a list of public transportation options, including park-and-ride and regional transit, for traveling during the I-10 closure.

Now Hiring: Crossing Guards

LADOT is now accepting applications for new Crossing Guards. Crossing guards keep students safe traveling to and from school and help educate and instill safe, alert walking behaviors in young Angelenos. Our crossing guards are placed at schools throughout the city and help provide experience and judgment to help children navigate a school crossing, while also increasing the visibility of their presence to drivers.
