Preparing Los Angeles for EL Nino

Preparing Los Angeles for El Niño

LADOT and the City of Los Angeles are taking proactive steps to keep Angelenos safe as a historic El Niño event has the potential to affect Southern California this year. El Niño is not a storm but an increase in Pacific ocean temperatures that brings with it certain weather patterns, including rainfall, flooding, and dangerous shoreline conditions. City crews are already taking action to protect neighborhoods, including reinforcing hillsides and preparing for power outages.

Angelenos should take steps now to protect themselves from severe weather. If you drive a car, check your vehicle wipers, lights, brakes, tire inflation, and tread wear now to ensure safe operation during storms. If and when rainy weather occurs, avoid driving, walking, or biking through moving water. Just twelve inches of moving water can sweep away a small vehicle.

While it’s still too early to know the exact timing or intensity of any El Niño-related storms, it’s not too early to be prepared. Sign up for NotifyLA emergency alerts for information on road closures, evacuations, and storm impacts. Develop a family evacuation plan, including destinations and transportation. Check if your home is in a flood zone, and pick up free sandbags from LAFD stations to protect your property.

Red Flag Warning Parking Restrictions in Effect through Friday

Red Flag Warning: Parking Restrictions in Effect through Friday

In anticipation of expected Santa Ana winds and high temperatures. The Los Angeles Fire Department has issued a Red Flag warning for 48 hours starting Thursday Morning at 6 am.

When a Red Flag Day is declared by the Los Angeles City Fire Department, parking is strictly prohibited in posted areas within the Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zones. These zones include narrow roads, sharp curves, hairpin turns, and key intersections, areas where parked vehicles can block access for emergency responders and trap residents during evacuation.

For more information about the current Red Flag Warning and locations where parking restrictions are in effect visit the Fire Department website.
