LADOT Celebrates Launch of $60 Million South LA EcoLab

This week, we joined a coalition of community partners at Vermont Square Park to announce the South LA Eco Lab Project. The project is made possible by a $35 million grant from the CA Strategic Growth Council as well as $24.6 million in funding from Metro and the City of Los Angeles that will advance sustainable, economic development in South LA.  The South LA Eco-Lab will facilitate economic development through Climate Action within the project area to achieve the community’s vision for a socially inclusive, sustainable, green community resilient to climate change.

This program expands LADOT's commitment to achieving Universal Basic Mobility through programs that promote safe, reliable, affordable, and accessible transportation options for residents through the establishment of an e-bike library and the expansion of Blue LA EV carshare. It also will also improve neighborhood quality of life by adding greenspace and 25 miles of cool pavement which reduce temperatures experienced on the street. The program also provides economic training opportunities in green jobs to ensure that the benefits of these programs accrue to residents within the project area.

This program is designed, led, and made possible by a coalition of community partners including SLATE-Z, CicLAvia, Climate Resolve, Coalition for Responsible Community Development, GRID Alternatives, LACI, LA Neighborhood Land Trust, SAJE, SCOPE, TreePeople, and TRUST South LA who joined with the City of Los Angeles, LA Metro, and Los Angeles Trade-Technical College to secure this grant.

This area of South LA has been identified as one of the most polluted areas by the California EPA with 60% of the population in the project area living below the poverty level, 1-in-3 unemployed, nearly half experiencing severe housing cost burdens, and approximately 1-in-5 individuals relying on active modes of transportation (walking, wheeling, or taking transit). With the help of the grant, the South LA Eco-Lab will invest in infrastructure projects such as LADOT Stress-Free connections and EV Car Share, StreetsLA Cool Pavement projects and so many more improvements. Funding for the project will begin in 2023, with a completion date of 2028.

 

Groundbreaking For New Neighborhood Intersection Safety Improvements at Telfair Ave. & Montague St.

Last week we joined Councilmember Monica Rodrigez to break ground at Telfair and Montague where a new traffic circle will soon be installed. Fully funded by a grant from the State of California, this neighborhood safety enhancement is designed to calm traffic and create a safer, more “people-friendly” intersection.

How it works:

• Drivers must come to a full stop before entering the intersection to navigate around the circle. Large trucks, school buses, and emergency vehicles will have sufficient space to still pass through.
• Marked crosswalks are set back from the corner to provide a safe crossing point and allow space for drivers to wait outside of the circle while pedestrians cross.
• Accessible curb ramps are added at all crosswalks.
• Sharrow pavement markings and signage create a “bicycle boulevard” route connecting to nearby bikeways.

Telfair Avenue and Montague Street are both designated on the Neighborhood Enhanced Network (NEN) of the Mobility Plan 2035. Streets on the NEN are intended to provide comfortable and safe routes for localized travel of slower-moving modes, such as walking and bicycling. Enhancing these local streets with a traffic-calming center island and other complementary features will improve access to multiple community destinations, including several schools and commercial centers.

Family And Friends Remember The Life Of Joshua Markowitz 

On Sunday the world recognized World Day of Remembrance for road traffic victims. We know around the world millions are killed or seriously injured on the roads and that it affects victims, families, and communities alike.  Last weekend LADOT joined the loved ones of Joshua Markowitz for a Rainbow Halo Dedication. 27-year-old Josh was the victim of a traffic crash on February 6, 2021, on Hollywood Blvd by a DUI driver. The fact is this death, along with every road traffic death, was preventable. Ending traffic violence requires each of us to take responsibility when we drive. Installing a Rainbow Halo is a way to honor the life taken from a family and community too soon and a reminder that instills a sense of responsibility in drivers. 

We will continue to echo the importance of road safety around the world and especially for our children. Join us as we support The UN Road Safety Fund to help make a difference in delivering life-saving solutions for children on the roads. The 90th Annual Hollywood Christmas Parade Comes To Town

This Sunday, November 27th celebrate Christmas time at the Hollywood Christmas Parade. This year is the 90th anniversary of the parade. Enjoy Hollywood celebrity appearances, colorful floats, and much more. The parade will be on Hollywood Blvd starting at the Chinese Theater at 6:00 pm. The U-shaped parade route will travel east to Vine, south on Vine St to Sunset Blvd., and west on Sunset Blvd. back to Orange Drive.LADOT is executing road closures and parking restrictions to assist the parade.

CicLAvia Rolls Through South LA 

Next Weekend, CicLAvia is opening up streets in South LA. Gear up to freely and safely explore 7.25 miles of the South LA neighborhood. Sunday, December 4th from 9 am to 3 pm come and enjoy the open streets in whatever way you choose. Whether you're biking, walking, skating, or spectating this event is for everyone of all ages and all abilities.
