Funding Awarded for the Chandler Bicycle Connection Project

LADOT is unveiling the full design of the Chandler bicycle connection which will create a 21-mile continuous protected bicycle facility from Chatsworth to our neighbors in the City of Burbank - transforming how people can move across the San Fernando Valley.

The Chandler Bicycle Connection is a 3-mile project on Chandler Boulevard between Leghorn Ave and Vineland Ave that will upgrade the existing, 5’-wide bicycle lanes to protected bicycle lanes, by adding bollards and curb stops. It closes the gap between the existing Orange Line Bike Path and Chandler Bike Paths with a low-stress bikeway that is safe and comfortable for all users.

Once completed, the project will establish a continuous route of protected and off-street bikeways from Burbank to the Sepulveda Basin. The project is consistent with the Mobility Plan, which designates Chandler Boulevard as a striped bike lane in the Tier 2 Bike Lane Network. Construction will begin in Summer 2023 and be completed by Summer 2024.
 

New Bike Lane and Upgrades To Avenue 19- Albion to San Fernando Rd

We are getting to work on Avenue 19 in the Cypress Park neighborhood. Last week, Streets LA completed resurfacing the streets from Albion to San Fernando Road (pictured above). Beginning next week, LADOT will begin striping for the installation of 

• Crosswalks:
  • 1 New continental crosswalk on Ave 19 and Albion.
  • 2 Upgraded crosswalks from ladder to continental on Ave 19 and Pasadena. 
     
• Bike Lanes:
  • Northbound
    • New protected bike lanes from ~550 feet north of Humboldt Street to San Fernando Road on Ave19. These connect to the bike path.
    • Upgrading bike lanes to protected bike lanes from Pasadena Ave to ~550 feet north of Humboldt street on Ave19
  • Southbound
    • New protected bike lanes from San Fernando Road to ~550 feet north of Humboldt on Ave 19
    • Upgrading unprotected bike lanes to buffered bike lanes from ~550 feet north of Humboldt to Barranca St. on Ave 19
    • New southbound bike lane and protected bike lane from Barranca St. to Pasadena Ave.

This project will provide a bicycle-friendly connection between the LA River Path and Lincoln Heights, Chinatown, and Downtown by way of Avenue 19, improving access between the river and the surrounding on-street bicycle network. It will also provide another option for connecting to the new Figueroa bike lanes that may be much more comfortable and stress-free for riders. 

Resurfacing of Anaheim Street, Avalon Boulevard to Gulf Avenue for Anaheim Street Safety Improvements Project

Starting this week, our partners at StreetsLA have begun resurfacing along Anaheim Street in Wilmington. The construction will result in closures along this street. The public is advised to use Opp Street, Wilmington Boulevard, G Street, Avalon Boulevard, or other alternate routes. Following resurfacing, LADOT will install new safety features along this corridor.

These critical safety improvements on Anaheim St in Wilmington will improve traffic safety and connectivity for everyone who uses the street. Since 2017, LADOT has installed safety improvements on 2.2 miles of Anaheim St, between Figueroa St and Henry Ford Ave. This includes speed feedback signs, upgraded crosswalk markings, pedestrian paddle signs, six Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacons (RRFB), and leading pedestrian intervals (also known as a pedestrian headstart) at seven intersections. Still, there's more work to be done to improve safety for all users of the street, including people walking and biking.

LADOT has partnered with StreetsLA and Council District 15 to develop Wilmington Safe Streets - a project that further increases safety, comfort, and connectivity for people traveling along Anaheim St and on neighborhood streets in Wilmington, including L St, Eubank Ave, Frigate Ave, and Neptune Ave. For Anaheim St, the project would reorganize the street in order to calm traffic speeds, give people on bikes a dedicated space to travel, and improve the experience for people walking along and across Anaheim St. In addition to bicycle lanes and curb extensions, the project also includes new pedestrian signals, left-turn signals, as well as pedestrian-scaled lighting, street trees that transform Anaheim St into a neighborhood-serving street.

Final Chance For South LA Residents To Apply For The Mobility Wallet 

Time is winding down for South LA residents to apply for LADOT's Mobility Wallet Pilot program. As part of LADOT's South LA Universal Basic Mobility pilot program, the City Of Los Angeles and Metro are offering South L.A resident a chance to receive $150 per month for transportation costs. The Mobility Wallet Pilot Program accepting applications for the program which will ultimately provide subsidies for 1000 people that meet the eligibility criteria. Program participants will receive a prepaid debit card to be used to buy fare on public transit (bus or train) and other shared transit options including e-scooters, bikes, carshare, ride-hailing and taxis.

To be eligible you must: 

• Be 18 years of age or older
• Live in the South Los Angeles area outlined by the program 
• Meet the program’s household annual income requirement. 

Applications will be accepted until Nov 15, 2022. Metro will complete a randomized selection if the program receives a surplus of applicants.
