School is Out for Summer

School is Out for Summer!

Over the last week, LAUSD officially began Summer vacation!

While students are out of class, LADOT’s work to deliver safer streets continues. Over Summer our comprehensive school safety program will expand as we install additional speed humps, intersection safety treatments, new speed limit reductions, and continue hiring crossing guards to ensure a safe travel environment when students return in the Fall.

And this year, we have an important addition to our toolbox. Our automated Speed Safety Systems program was just approved for installation by the Los Angeles City Council. With the first systems scheduled to come online for the start of the school year in August, this pilot program will ultimately install 125 speed safety systems across the City, including near schools, to help reduce excessive speeding, save lives, and improve street safety by encouraging safer driving behavior.

In the meantime, we wish all students a fun and safe summer break. Remember that if you are driving during these warmer weather months, slow down, and look for children playing, walking, or learning to ride their bikes.

Happy summer to students and adults alike!

New Traffic Signals Activated Across LA

New Traffic Signals Activated Across LA

This June, LADOT will activate a total of seven new traffic signals across the City, including four left turn signals and three Pedestrian Hybrid Beacon (also known as HAWK signals). These signal activations demonstrate LADOT’s commitment to making our streets safer for all Angelenos.

Left turn signals provide drivers a dedicated signal to turn which reduces potential for conflicts with pedestrians and countervailing traffic. This month, left turn signals were added at the intersections of Washington Boulevard and Western Avenue, Avenue 59 and Figueroa Street, Vernon Avenue and Western Avenue, and Union Avenue and Wilshire Boulevard.

Unlike traditional flashing beacons, HAWK signals provide drivers with a steady red light when pedestrians are crossing, making them more visible and safer. They also provide a countdown for the pedestrian indicating the remaining time to exit the crosswalk. This month, HAWK signals have been activated on Hollywood Boulevard and Winona Boulevard and Union Avenue and Wilshire Boulevard. An additional HAWK at Marathon Street and Virgil Avenue will be activated tomorrow, June 18, 2026.

The previously announced HAWK signal at Beverly Boulevard and Mansfield Drive was activated on June 12, 2026. To accommodate the community, this HAWK will be equipped with contactless “wave” buttons that do not require being touched. It will also activate automatically from sundown Friday to sundown Saturday.

Mobility Action Plan Enters Phase 2

Mobility Action Plan Enters Phase 2

This past winter, LADOT completed the first phase of engagement of the Mobility Action Plan (MAP), The MAP will produce both short- and long-term transportation investment plans to help the City prioritize projects, coordinate resources, and deliver real improvements. Our team connected with over 3,000 Angelenos through a digital survey and at more than 20 community events. LADOT also partnered with five locally trusted organizations to reach LA’s communities, ensuring the transportation priorities represented in the MAP are grounded in what residents truly want.

Across the City, residents shared ongoing barriers caused by a lack of infrastructure and road safety. Angelenos want investments to improve transit services, to build bike lanes, and to make the City more pedestrian-friendly with shade, better sidewalks, and more crosswalks.

In Phase 2 of the MAP, LADOT will finalize the Mobility Action Plan, including the 5-Year Plan, 20-Year Transportation Strategy, and recommendations. Later in 2026, LADOT will work with City partners so the MAP can help guide transportation priorities.
