New Crosswalks Coming to a Street Near You
Every year, LADOT installs thousands of safety treatments as part of regular maintenance, safety and mobility projects on major corridors, and neighborhood network improvements. These treatments include crosswalks, bicycle infrastructure, speed humps, traffic and pedestrian signals, and more. Earlier this year, at the direction of Mayor Karen Bass, LADOT expanded its safety efforts by working directly with transportation advocates to identify locations not already planned with existing safety and mobility projects to install new crosswalks.
As a result of that effort, new high visibility crosswalks will be installed at Winnetka Avenue, Saticoy Street, Normandie Avenue, Venice Boulevard, Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, Whittier Boulevard, and Pacific Avenue this week! All of the new crosswalks are located on corridors listed on LA’s High Injury Network, which represents the 7.5% of City streets that account for more than 60% of deaths and severe injuries for people walking.
These new crosswalks are just a small part of LADOT’s ongoing commitment to making our City streets safer for all. LADOT will deliver new crosswalks at 100 locations determined with community input in the coming weeks–on top of the nearly 1,000 new, upgraded, and maintained crosswalks the department installs each year. We look forward to continuing this important work alongside our partners in building a safer transportation network for all Angelenos.

Next week, LADOT and Brotherhood Crusade are hosting a virtual community conversation on Tuesday, July 28, from 6-7pm, to discuss the recent improvements on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard. Last month, following street resurfacing and pavement repair by StreetsLA, LADOT completed protected bike lanes on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard between Broadway and Central Avenue. In addition to the bike lane, crews installed speed humps, new ADA-accessible parking stalls, and 39 upgraded curb ramps.
In the coming months, LADOT will install bike wayfinding signs on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard between Central Avenue and Hooper Avenue. Protected bike lanes will be installed on Broadway Place between Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and Main Street and 39th Street between Broadway Place and Figueroa Street. Finally, a traffic signal will be activated at 39th Street and Broadway Place. Construction is expected to continue through Summer/Fall 2026. Through extensive in-person outreach and a record breaking online survey with 5,000 responses, his efforts have successfully united diverse stakeholders and set a high standard for community-centered transportation planning.

Since joining LADOT in 2008, Zakiya Sheaffers has provided vital administrative support at the Western Parking Enforcement Division, handling challenging citizen interactions with exceptional professionalism. Her proactive initiative was recently highlighted when she successfully resolved technical issues to activate six new electric vehicle charging stations for the division.

Resources For Residents Affected by Lineage Warehouse Fire
As the City of Los Angeles and Council District 14 continue recovery efforts following the June 17 Lineage Warehouse Fire in Boyle Heights, LADOT wishes to make residents aware of the following resources available to affected Angelenos:
Temporary Housing: Airbnb.org and 211 LA are partnering to provide free, emergency housing. Contact 211 LA to determine eligibility and book a stay: 626-406-2786, 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM
Community Resource Center: Residents and businesses of Boyle Heights and nearby communities can obtain air purifiers, food kits, financial assistance, help transitioning to a new job, receive health services, and access to various recovery resources and City and County programs at Lou Costello Jr. Recreation Center, located at 3141 E. Olympic Blvd, Monday - Friday, 10:00 AM - 5:00 PM and Saturday 10:00 AM - 2:00 PM
Lyft is offering discounted rides through July 17th for impacted residents who need transportation to and from the Community Resource Center. Enter the code BHRELIEF26 to claim the discount.
Community Notifications: The Mayor’s Office has created a dedicated WhatsApp channel for Boyle Heights residents to receive regular updates on the recovery process. Download WhatsApp Messenger for free from the Google Play Store or Apple App Store.
Free Buses: LADOT is making temporary service adjustments to serve Boyle Heights residents, offering additional free buses in the area. Two additional buses have been added to the Boyle Heights DASH route, operating daily with free service every 10-15 minutes until further notice.
LADOT has also temporarily waived fares for Cityride Dial-a-Ride service for seniors and people with disabilities. A Cityride van is stationed at LAC+USC Medical Center to provide emergency transportation. Service runs daily from 6:30 AM to 4:30 PM. Celebrating Round 1 of Watts Rising Grants
Last week, LADOT joined Watts Rising in partnership with the State of California’s Strategic Growth Council for an event celebrating the end of Watts Rising’s Round 1 Transformative Climate Communities (TCC) Grant. Through the $33.25 million TCC Grant and the later $35 million Choice Neighborhood Implementation (CNI) grant from the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), the Watts Rising Collaborative has been executing projects aimed toward benefiting the residents of Watts by promoting economic development, improving public health, engaging residents, reducing greenhouse gases, avoiding displacement, and beautifying the neighborhood.
Through these grants, LADOT launched ten zero emission electric buses on the DASH Watts route. These zero emission buses, along with new AC chargers to support their operation, are bringing cleaner air and quieter streets to the Watts community. LADOT’s Brian Lee spoke to event attendees about the process of deploying the buses and electrifying the route. Construction Advisory: Chandler Boulevard
LADOT wishes to advise all road users of ongoing construction on Chandler Boulevard between Vineland Avenue and Leghorn Avenue due to the installation of the Chandler Bicycle Connection. The Chandler Bicycle Connection is designed to close the gap between the existing G Line Bike Path and Chandler Bike Paths with a low-stress bikeway that is safe and comfortable for all users, providing a more comfortable transportation option for traveling in the neighborhood and across the Valley. CicLAvia Connects the Hollywoods
Last weekend, CicLAvia rolled through East Hollywood, Hollywood, and West Hollywood at CicLAvia: Meet the Hollywoods! Over six miles of Hollywood Boulevard, Highland Avenue, and Santa Monica Boulevard were closed to vehicle traffic and open for a day of biking, walking, exploring, and connecting with the community. Dodger Stadium Transportation Study Survey
LADOT is conducting a transportation study to identify potential strategies to improve access to and from Dodger Stadium and reduce impacts on neighboring communities. Complete the Dodger Stadium survey by July 13 for a chance to win a $50 gift card.
Spring/Alameda Phase 2 Survey
The Spring/Alameda Safety and Mobility Project is moving into the next phase of design, and LADOT wants to hear what you think. Review the proposed design to improve safety and access in Chinatown and take the Spring/Alameda survey by August 31.
