Groundbreaking For A New Traffic Improvement In The NE Valley With More To Come

This week LADOT joined Councilmember Monica Rodriguez for a groundbreaking for a new pedestrian hybrid beacon at the intersection of Haddon Avenue and Paxton Street which is the first in a series of improvements for 9 different intersections in the NE Valley. LADOT was granted close to $3 million in Federal funding for the NE Valley Traffic Improvements and Mobility Project. The improvements at the 9 different intersections include: 

• 7 intersections will receive Ped Hybrid Beacons
  • Chatsworth Dr & Los Alimos St 
  • Hubbard St & Pearwood Ave/ Aztec St
  • Haddon Ave & Paxton St 
  • Foothill Blvd & Wyngate St
  • San Fernando Rd & Kagel Canyon Rd
  • Foothill Blvd & 200' E/O Machrea St. at Fire Station #74 
  • Olive View Dr., Midblock, 700' E/O Roxford St. 
• Left-Turn Signal at Foothill Blvd & Mt. Gleason Ave 
• New Full Traffic Signal: Orion Ave & Plummer St 

The pedestrian hybrid beacon or HAWK beacon is a traffic improvement that helps those walking or riding safely cross a high-traffic intersection. The signal is only activated when pushed by a pedestrian, flashing yellow lights signal drivers that a pedestrian is waiting to cross and they should slow down, and a solid red light forces drivers to stop and safely allow those waiting to cross. Along with these improvements include the addition of upgraded high visibility crosswalks, solar powered speed feedback signs, curb ramps, a pedestrian island, and an equestrian hybrid beacon. 

New Left Turn Signal Activated On Foothill Blvd & Valmont Street

On Friday our LADOT Crews were on Foothill Blvd & Valmont Street activating a new left turn signal. This traffic improvement is important for street safety as it helps reduce traffic collisions on busy streets with a heavy volume of cars attempting left turns. Crews also installed a new bike lane with green markings.  The colored pavement in bike lanes helps both the lane and riders become more visible to drivers. This safety feature can also create a clear path for bicyclists when approaching a conflicting area like vehicle turning lanes.

 

Wilmington Safe Streets Celebration and Bike Ride

Join us as we celebrate the new improvements on Anaheim Street! On Saturday, February 4th at 10:00 am,  LADOT is hosting a celebration and bike ride. Friends and neighbors are invited on a slow-paced bike ride to experience the new street design in Wilmington and learn about more improvements on the way to the area. Those in attendance can also enjoy free food, music, kid's activities, and much more. The event is open to everyone and you do not need to ride to attend.  If you plan to join the bike ride please bring your bike, helmet, and water.

Drivers Are Reminded Of the Long-Term Closure To Muholland Drive

Closures are still in place on Mulholland Drive and along certain residential streets in the Santa Monica Mountains as work continues to clear debris and repair roads damaged during the recent storms. We want to remind drivers that Mulholland Drive has a long-term road closure extending from Laurel Canyon Blvd to Beverly Place to the west of Coldwater Canyon. There are two locations where the soil underneath Mulholland Drive has eroded so as to make passage unsafe for vehicles. As a result, these locations are now closed to all traffic. Commuters are advised to obey traffic officers, use alternate routes and avoid canyon roads wherever possible over the coming days and weeks until repair work is complete.

The Valley Hosts The First CicLAvia Of The Year 

Save the date! Get ready to enjoy a 5-mile stretch of open streets in the Valley for the first CicLAvia of the year. On Sunday, February 26 come jog, bike, or skate through Sherman Way connecting Canoga Park, Winnetka, and Reseda. Participants can enjoy the route however they choose and is open to everyone of all ages and all abilities.
