Rainbow halo dedication for Jammie

Rainbow Halo Dedication for Jammie Wilson

LADOT joined in mourning with the family and loved ones of Jammie Wilson for the unveiling of a Rainbow Halo in honor of his life. Three years ago a hit-and-run driver senselessly took Jammie’s life at the intersection of Normandie & 51st. LADOT worked with SoCal Families for Safe Streets to install a Rainbow Halo on 51st St. The memorial is a permanent fixture that serves as a reminder of the need to promote safe streets and the necessity for drivers to stay alert and practice safe driving.

At LADOT, we know that traffic deaths are preventable and that we also have a responsibility to bear witness and build a transportation system that prioritizes safety over speed and protects pedestrians like Jammie.

If you are interested in how you can get involved in the Rainbow Halo program or other memorial programs, information is available on our website.

LAUSD Students Return Back To School

LAUSD Students Return Back To School

LAUSD students returned back to school this week for the fall semester. We take this moment to remind our readers that kids throughout the city will be commuting to class whether they are riding, biking, walking, or rolling and that people driving should take precautions and looks out for children during their commute..

Here are some tips for everyone to help make it a safe school year:

  • If you are driving, be aware of school buses and pay attention to the signals being used
  • Drivers, stay alert when commuting through neighborhoods, school zones, and bus stops
  • Reduce your speed
  • Avoid blocking crosswalks

And remember that our DASH buses are fare-free and a safe way to get to class.

New Speed Tables Installed on 6th Street

New Speed Tables Installed on 6th Street

New speed tables have made their way to 6th Street. Our LADOT crews were out in the Wilshire neighborhood installing the new safety improvements between LaBrea and Highland Ave. Like a speed hump, speed tables are a traffic calming feature that helps reduce the speeds of oncoming traffic where pedestrians frequent. Speed tables are unique in that they have a flat surface that raises the entire wheelbase of a vehicle in order to slow it down and can be installed on larger streets with higher speeds than traditional speed humps.

We know that speeding is a significant key in the severity of a collision and LADOT prioritizes improvements that promote safe speeds in order to prevent severe and fatal collisions on our streets.
