HAWK Beacon Lands in Eagle Rock

Last Thursday, LADOT joined Los Angeles City Council District 14 Councilmember Kevin de Leon, community members, and local schoolchildren to activate a new high-intensity activated crosswalk at the intersection of Eagle Rock Boulevard and Merton Avenue in Eagle Rock. Also known as a pedestrian hybrid or HAWK beacon, this new type of pedestrian signal serves as an improvement over other types of flashing beacons and utilizes a red signal to prompt vehicles to stop as pedestrians cross the street. In addition to reducing collisions at crossings, HAWK beacons also have a much higher vehicle compliance rate in comparison to signalized crossings and crossings with flashing yellow beacons. Over the course of the next year, LADOT will install an additional nine HAWK beacons throughout Los Angeles.

Getting to Work on San Vicente Boulevard

The City of Los Angeles is getting to work on a safer, more connected San Vicente Boulevard between Olympic Boulevard and La Brea Avenue. The resultant project, titled the San Vicente Safety & Mobility Project, will implement the city’s Mobility Plan policies to prioritize the boulevard for high-quality bicycle enhancements and a more comfortable street for all users. This project proposes to repurpose one travel lane in each direction to calm traffic, and to make space for bike lanes.

To help inform members of the public about the San Vicente Safety & Mobility Project, LADOT invites all to attend the San Vicente On-the-Street Safety Walk, an in-person event that will take place on Saturday, September 18 from 9:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. on San Vicente Boulevard between Olympic Boulevard and La Brea Avenue. LADOT, ITS America Host Gender Equity Event

This past Thursday, LADOT collaborated with ITS America to present Advancing Gender Equitable Transportation for Los Angeles, an online event that examined the subject of gender-based barriers to transportation and the potential solutions to removing such barriers. Among the keynote speakers at the event was LADOT General Manager Seleta Reynolds, who discussed LADOT’s recently released report Changing Lanes: A Gender Equity Transportation Study, and addressed such topics as mobility’s role in providing opportunity to individuals, how building an equitable transportation system will support efforts toward equity and economic development, the disparities in transportation that create opportunity gaps, and solutions that Los Angeles and other cities may implement to address these issues.

To encourage Angelenos to get up and biking as the summer comes to a close, L.A. Metro Bike Share is currently offering 30-day passes for $1. Metro Provides Ballot Drop Boxes, Free Election Day Transit

To assist local voters, L.A. Metro announced last month that the agency has stationed 10 ballot drop boxes at prominent transit locations across Los Angeles County, providing greater ease of access for those to looking to deposit their ballots for the upcoming election. Additionally, L.A. Metro will provide free transit service to those traveling on election day, which is scheduled to take place on Tuesday, September 14, 2021. To provide transit accessibility for those who travel in Los Angeles on, before, and after election day, LADOT Transit currently offers fare-free service on its popular DASH bus service.
