September is National Preparedness Month

September is National Preparedness Month!

September is National Preparedness Month. Our commitment to keeping Los Angeles moving goes hand-in-hand with ensuring that we’re ready to respond swiftly and effectively in the face of an emergency.

LADOT’s own emergency readiness is a team effort. Our Transit division is ready to provide transportation under all types of conditions including mobilization to support evacuations. Traffic officers are trained in emergency response and help to keep critical routes open. LADOT Special Traffic Operations plans potential detour and evacuation routes in advance, while crews repair signals and other safety equipment when it is damaged. ATSAC allows us to monitor and manage traffic signals in real-time across the city, ensuring that we can respond to changing conditions, help emergency vehicles reach their destinations, and assist with evacuations. LADOT personnel regularly participate in citywide emergency drills to ensure that during an actual emergency, there is seamless coordination and collaboration across departments to protect the people of Los Angeles.

The importance of citywide preparedness is especially important as our region faces excessive heat warnings. You can make a plan with your household by knowing where to go and how to stay in touch during an emergency. Build a basic emergency kit with essentials, make sure you stay in the loop by signing up for emergency alerts at notifyla.org, and follow @ladotofficial on social media so you’ll always know what’s happening on the roads.

South LA Library EV Chargers

Construction Update: South LA Library EV Chargers

After breaking ground in late July, last week the City’s General Services Department began installation of the first electric vehicle (EV) chargers at Hyde Park Miriam Matthews Library in South LA. Site preparation and electrical work was ongoing for almost two months before hitting this exciting milestone.

In addition to the four chargers at Hyde Park Miriam Matthews library, an additional 12 chargers total will be installed over the next few months at Vernon, Ascot, and Junipero Serra libraries as part of LADOT’s Universal Basic Mobility (UBM) pilot program. This element of the UBM program will ensure that South LA is not left behind in the clean energy and electrification transition and that residents have access to affordable charging opportunities.

Once activated, these chargers will be free of charge at least through March 2026. Learn more about LADOT’s efforts to provide safe, affordable, and equitable transportation to the South LA area on our Universal Basic Mobility website.

During the heat wave, keep these tips in mind to remain cool, safe, and comfortable:

  • Stay hydrated and remain alert for signs of heat-related illness like dizziness, fatigue, nausea, and muscle cramps. Check in on your household, family, friends, pets, and neighbors.
  • Do not leave young children and pets unattended in personal vehicles for any period of time. Cars interiors can reach lethal temperatures quickly.
  • Limit your exposure to direct sunlight between 10:00 am and 4:00 pm when the sun's rays are the strongest.

LADOT bus services, including DASH and Commuter Express, are air-conditioned to keep you comfortable as you travel this summer.  Additional safety tips may be found on the Los Angeles Fire Department’s website. For safety information in additional languages, please visit the City’s Heat Relief Outreach Materials.
