Be Safe This Halloween

Be Safe This Halloween!

Halloween is a favorite holiday for Angelenos of all ages, and safety is a key ingredient to make sure everyone can enjoy the festivities. Whether you're taking the kids trick-or-treating, dressing up for a party, or just enjoying the decorations, here are a few simple tips to ensure that the Halloween frights stay fun for all.

If you're commuting to a Halloween event, consider using public transportation to avoid heavy traffic or parking issues. If you are driving, be especially alert for young pedestrians, go slow in residential areas where children are likely to be trick-or-treating, and never drive under the influence. For families going trick-or-treating and people walking to their favorite local haunts, remember to stay mindful of your surroundings and avoid distractions.

Let's keep the costumes scary but the streets safe to make sure this Halloween is filled with treats and no tricks when it comes to safety!

  Chandler Bicycle Connection Wins Award

Chandler Bicycle Connection Wins Community Project Funding Grand Award

This week, LADOT joined with Congressman Tony Cárdenas and Council President Emeritus Paul Krekorian to celebrate a $650,000 Community Project Funding Grant Award from the US Housing and Urban Development Program. This funding will be used for the Chandler Bicycle Connection, which will upgrade the existing bicycle lanes on Chandler Boulevard.

In addition to the nearly six lane miles of separated, bollard-protected bike lanes, the Chandler Bicycle Connection will include 25 bike boxes for safe left and right turns, 15 intersections with bike signals, high-visibility crosswalks at all intersections, dedicated blue curb parking spaces, and bus boarding islands at high-volume stops. When complete, the Chandler Bike Connection will join with the Chandler Bike Path and the G Line Bike Path to create 21 miles of protected and off-street bikeways from Burbank to the Sepulveda Basin.

Thank you to Congressman Càrdenas for securing this crucial grant and advocating for biking in the San Fernando Valley.

Celebrating 54th Street Safety Improvements in Chesterfield Square Park

Last weekend, LADOT hosted an event in Chesterfield Square Park to celebrate the new pedestrian and bicycle safety improvements on 54th Street in South LA! LADOT led a community bike ride to tour the new street, and community groups like SLATE-Z and People For Mobility Justice were on hand to provide information on safe streets and the Universal Basic Mobility Pilot Program.

We loved seeing all your Halloween costumes and engaging with the community on the new street improvements! Thanks to everyone who came out!

Halloween Safety Tips for Drivers and Trick or Treaters

Halloween Safety Tips for Drivers and Trick-or-Treaters

As Halloween approaches and our City streets fill with witches, monsters, and ghouls, LADOT reminds you to stay safe by following these Spooky Season Safety Tips!

For Drivers:

  • Slow down and stay alert for children. Use your headlights.
  • Large trucks and SUVs have a large front blind spot. Be aware that children crossing in front of your vehicle may not be visible.
  • Don’t drink and drive. Make a plan to take public transportation or rideshare instead.

For Parents and Trick-or-Treaters:

  • Before heading out to trick-or-treat, talk to your children about crossing the street safely. Emphasize stopping at the curb, looking both ways, listening for traffic, and only crossing at crosswalks and dedicated intersections.
  • Make sure your child’s costume doesn’t affect their sight. Avoid full-face masks or sunglasses at night.
  • Increase your visibility by wearing light or reflective clothing, and carrying a flashlight or glowstick.

Remember that safety always comes first. Together we can make this a spooktacular Halloween!
