LADOT Celebrates 40 Years of ATSAC
This year marks an exciting milestone for LADOT as we celebrate 40 years of ATSAC (Advanced Transportation System and Coordination). Since its launch as part of the City’s efforts to manage traffic during the 1984 Summer Olympics, ATSAC has grown from a ground breaking local initiative into one of the world’s most advanced traffic systems, monitoring and adjusting traffic signals to respond to conditions across Los Angeles.
In 2022, we unveiled our new and improved ATSAC center designed to take on the ever expanding complexity of the city’s transportation system. This state-of-the-art facility brings more advanced technology, real-time data analytics, and expanded monitoring capacity. With cutting-edge tools and a more adaptable setup, the new center is designed to keep pace with the evolving needs of our city. As we look to host the upcoming 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games, LADOT will be building on a legacy of innovation to create safer, greener, and more efficient travel for everyone—athletes, visitors, and Angelenos alike.
Thanks to the dedication of countless engineers and planners, ATSAC has kept LA moving for four decades. Here’s to celebrating its journey and the exciting future ahead!
"Legends of ATSAC" Honored at 40th Anniversary
At LADOT’s celebration of ATSAC’s 40th Anniversary last week, staff and leadership gathered to honor nine Legends of ATSAC: Brian Gallagher, George Chen, John McCullough, Tony Argento, Raul De Anda, Manoochehr Adhami, Jack Massopust, James Okazaki, and John Fisher.
Brian Gallagher and George Chen are current LADOT employees; the rest are retired. All nine spent the majority of their careers dedicated to ATSAC, either building the system or making significant contributions to its development.
The anniversary party also celebrated the dedication of our ATSAC facility as the Ed Rowe Advanced Transportation System and Coordination Center. Stephen Edwin “Ed” Rowe. Rowe joined the City’s Traffic Department in 1957, and served as GM of the Department of Transportation from 1987 to 1993. During his time with the department, he championed the ATSAC system in the lead-up to the 1984 Olympic Games, securing funding and overseeing its implementation. Following the Games, Rowe worked with Mayor Tom Bradley to expand the system citywide, a vision that was finally realized in 2013.
Because of these Legends along with the hundreds of LADOT employees who have worked to improve this system, ATSAC is the cutting-edge system it is today, able to better the lives of millions of Angelenos every single day. LADOT thanks them for their service, dedication, ingenuity, and leadership!

LADOT Staff Attend Women's Transportation Seminar Gala
LADOT staff members were proud to attend the 2024 Annual Scholarships and Awards Gala hosted by WTS-LA, a chapter of the Women’s Transportation Seminar (WTS). This event celebrates the accomplishments of women in the transportation sector and offers scholarships to the next generation of female leaders. Attending such an event is an invaluable opportunity for personal growth, networking, and inspiration. It reinforces the importance of supporting and advancing women’s roles in a traditionally male-dominated industry, providing a platform for collaboration and mentorship.
