Honoring the World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims
Each year, on the World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims, we pause to honor lives tragically lost and forever changed by traffic collisions. Every name added to this list represents a person whose story was cut short. Too many families have experienced a day when everything changed.
It is important to say this clearly: traffic deaths are preventable. These are not accidents without cause or solution. They are the result of decisions we make behind the wheel, on the streets, and in how we design our city. And as long as even one life is lost, our work is far from over.
At LADOT, we are committed to creating safer streets for all. We work every day to build safer streets, educate motorists on safe driving behavior, and invest in pedestrian and bike-friendly infrastructure. Our goal is not just to reduce collisions but to ultimately eliminate them. No one should have to endure the heartache of losing someone on our streets.
However, this work requires all of us. We ask every Angeleno to be a part of the solution:
- Slow down. Speed is a leading cause of fatal crashes.
- Stay alert. Put away distractions and focus on the road.
- Look out for each other. Whether you’re driving, biking, or walking, we share these streets.
Today, as we remember those we’ve lost, let’s honor their memory not just with reflection but with action. Each of us has the power to make a difference. If we all make safer choices, we can prevent the tragedies of tomorrow.
Safety Improvements Completed Along Via Marisol Corridor
LADOT's Central District team has recently completed a series of traffic safety improvements along the Via Marisol corridor, between its northerly and southerly intersections with Monterey Road. This project, requested by Council District 14, the Los Angeles Police Department, and residents, aims to create safer conditions for all road users along this busy street.
To address concerns about speeding and dangerous driving that put pedestrians, cyclists, and drivers at risk, LADOT conducted a corridor study. Based on the results, several new safety features have been implemented, including:
Installed Treatments:
- All-way stops at critical intersections
- Intersection splitter islands to help control traffic flow
- Speed tables to reduce vehicle speeds
- 2,600 feet of red curb maintenance along Via Marisol for improved visibility
These enhancements represent a step forward in making Via Marisol safer and more accessible for everyone in the community. We are grateful to the Monterey Hill community for their advocacy and partnership in pursuing safer streets for all road users.
