Remembering Lives Lost to Traffic Violence
This Sunday, November 16, LADOT joins with survivors, advocates, and family members of victims of traffic violence around the world in observing World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims, a day to honor those who have lost their lives or been injured in traffic collisions, and to recommit ourselves to building safer streets for everyone.
Traffic violence leaves an impact that ripples through families and communities. Each statistic represents a person, a loved one whose life was cut short or inalterably changed in an instant. At LADOT, we honor this day as a reminder of why our work is so deeply important: every project, every speed hump, every stop sign has the potential to save lives and prevent the kind of loss that affects far too many in our city and around the world.
This year, a coalition of traffic safety advocates including Streets are for Everyone (SAFE) and the State of California Office of Traffic Safety will be observing World Day of Remembrance in Downtown LA at the LADOT and CalTrans headquarters with an art installation that commemorates those who have lost their lives to traffic violence. We invite you to participate on Sunday. There are opportunities to volunteer, donate, or simply visit and bear witness and remember those we have lost. Learn more about Sunday’s event on SAFE’s website.
Together, let’s continue to push for a future where no one has to lose their life while simply getting where they need to go. Because every life lost on our streets is one too many.
New HAWK Pedestrian Beacon Activated at Florence & Cimarron
Last week, LADOT activated a new Pedestrian Hybrid Beacon, also known as a HAWK signal, at the intersection of Florence Ave and Cimarron St, enhancing safety for students and families walking in South LA. This crossing is a key route for children attending the nearby 74th Street Elementary School.
The HAWK signal remains dark until a pedestrian presses the button. Once activated, it flashes yellow before turning solid red, alerting drivers to stop and providing pedestrians with a protected time to cross.
This safety improvement was made possible thanks to the leadership of Council District 8 and the advocacy of residents. The new signal supports safer daily commutes and encourages more walking in the neighborhood.
