LADOT Awarded CEC Grant to Install One of the Largest Electric Vehicle Fleet Charging Systems

LADOT has been awarded a $6 million grant by the California Energy Commission to install one of the largest electric vehicle (EV) fleet charging systems in the United States that will be powered by a solar and storage microgrid. The solar and storage microgrid paired with 104 EV chargers will support LADOT’s adoption of electric buses as the agency transitions to a fully electric fleet by 2028. By delivering clean solar energy generated and storage capacity, the project will reduce greenhouse gas emissions, lower LADOT’s electricity costs, and also provide emergency backup power that will enable the agency to continue to operate in an outage.

Meeting our climate and sustainability goals requires persistent investment and urgent action,” said LADOT General Manager Seleta Reynolds. “This grant provides an essential support facility as we move closer to our goal of a fully electric fleet.”

LADOT selected Proterra and Apparent to install the EV-charging microgrid at the agency’s Washington Bus Yard where it will manage EV charging and overall energy use for more than 100 electric buses. LADOT will deploy 1.5 megawatts of rooftop and bus solar canopy paired with a 4.5MWh energy storage system provided by Apparent at the Washington Bus Yard to help power five Proterra 1.5-megawatt fleet chargers with 104 remote EV charging dispensers. The microgrid will utilize Apparent’s intelligent grid operating system (igOS™) platform to integrate Proterra Energy’s charging infrastructure with energy generation to coordinate how and when the electric buses are charged with energy generated from solar, or drawn from storage or the utility. At seven-and-a-half megawatts of EV charging power, the project is one of the largest fleet charging installations in the United States.

LADOT Applauds Congressional Approval of Infrastructure Bill

LADOT joined transportation leaders across the country in celebrating the passage of the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act by Congress this weekend. The bill represents a historic investment to help upgrade the nation’s infrastructure, including funding for roadway improvements, street safety, and public transportation. The bill is expected to also invest in key sustainability efforts, including fleet electrification and electric vehicle (EV) charging.

“The passage of this bold and historic infrastructure bill gives us a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to rebuild our infrastructure and invest in critical quality-of-life projects that impact all Angelenos,” said LADOT General Manager Seleta Reynolds. “From improving the safety of our streets and the quality of our air to supporting more local jobs and the movement of critical goods, this bill will help our continued pandemic recovery. I look forward to working with our partners in the region and DC to maximize the benefits for our communities.”

In addition to traditional transportation infrastructure funding, this $1 trillion bill provides more than $500 billion in new programs that directly support LADOT’s work to improve mobility in Los Angeles. Including $5 billion in grant funding for traffic safety projects that prevent injury and death and an additional $1 billion in competitive grants for active transportation projects. The bill also provides a $1 billion pilot to reconnect communities separated by highways and other barriers and a $500 million Smart City Challenge to develop smart infrastructure and integrate emerging modes.

New Bus Lane on Olive Street in Downtown Los Angeles

LADOT, in collaboration with StreetsLA and Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (Metro), installed new bus lanes along Olive Street in Downtown LA. The project was part of a joint project with Metro to improve bus traffic flow through Downtown LA. The new Olive Street bus lane will run from Pico Boulevard to 2nd Street, running through most of Downtown LA, and will support many existing bus routes using this street to commute through Downtown.

Veterans Day, Thursday, November 11, 2021, Relaxed Parking

This Veterans Day, certain city parking regulations will not be enforced due to Veterans Day being a national holiday. This is limited to only parking regulations enforced by the City of Los Angeles since the City does not have the authority to waive state parking laws.

On national holidays, including tomorrow's Veterans Day, the following parking restrictions are not enforced unless specifically posted:

• Time Limit
• Parking Meters
• No Parking with specified days and times only
• No stopping with specified days and times only
• Preferential parking districts
• Street sweeping (Also not enforced the day after Thanksgiving and Cesar Chavez Holiday)
