Breaking Ground on Safety Improvements In Boyle Heights

LADOT joined Councilmember Kevin de Leon and the Bureau of Engineering for the groundbreaking of new pedestrian crossing safety enhancements coming to Olympic Blvd in Boyle Heights. These improvements were advocated for by the community and funded through the Highway Safety Improvement Program.

The project includes one new flashing beacon to alert motorists of pedestrians crossing the road as well as curb extensions at the intersection of Camulos & Olympic where there is a transit stop to reduce the distance traveled and the amount of time pedestrians are exposed to traffic. There will also be an additional curb extension on Dacotah/Olympic near an elementary school and recreation center.

These improvements help create safe and walkable spaces in our neighborhoods by calming traffic and prioritizing safety along this major corridor.

Hosting London Mayor Sadiq Khan and Mayor Garcetti at the Los Angeles Cleantech Incubator

Earlier this week Los Angeles hosted the Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan and alongside Mayor Garcetti, showed how Los Angeles is leading in the development of a sustainable transit system. This was the Mayor of London's first international visit since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020.

The visit comes as London hits an electric vehicle milestone of having 10,000 chargers installed for public use in the city. Los Angeles had already reached the 10,000 charger milestone in January of 2021. During his visit, the London Mayor and Mayor Garcetti visited the Los Angeles Cleantech Incubator where the Mayors toured various zero-emission vehicles including LADOT's zero-emission DASH buses.

Mayor Sadiq Khan remarked during his visit to LACI that it is clear that Los Angeles and London both share challenges and goals in the fight for clean air and that he looks forward to building on the work that has been done and learning from each other's experiences.

LADOT is proud to be a key component of the effort to build a more sustainable city.

Western Our Way: Street Safety Celebration

We are moving forward with improvements on the Western Ave Redesign Project. Thanks to your feedback and sharing your thoughts and experiences of how you travel on Western Ave, we have finished the project design phase. To mark this milestone the city will hold a Street Safety Celebration on Saturday, June 4th at Harvard Park to discuss the planned improvements. Join Councilmember Marqueece Harris-Dawson, and city leaders to learn more about the new design coming to Western.

This is event is for everyone so bring family and friends to enjoy a free lunch, raffles, entertainment, and other activities!

AAPI Heritage Month: Historic Filipino Town

As we continue to celebrate Asian American & Pacific Islander Heritage Month in Los Angeles our next stop on our tour of neighborhoods with significant cultural and historical ties is Historic Filipino Town.

In the early 20th century, many Filipino immigrants originally settled in the area that is now known as Little Tokyo. After World War II, redevelopment pushed many residents out of the area and into neighborhoods to the north of the city center and in 2002 the area officially became designated by the City of Los Angeles as a historic-cultural neighborhood: Historic Filipinotown or HiFi.

When traveling through the neighborhood you can find significant features like the recently unveiled Historic Filipinotown Eastern Gateway arch. Officially called "Talang Gabay: Our Guiding Star," the arch was designed by artists Eliseo Art Silva and Celestino Geronimo Jr. and features Filipino cultural symbols. Talang Gabay was unveiled earlier this month on Beverly Boulevard near the 1st Street Bridge and is the largest gateway arch of its kind in the country!
