Sylmar Community Celebrates New Decorated Crosswalks
This week we joined community partners in Sylmar to celebrate the unveiling of newly decorated crosswalks along San Fernando Road. On Monday a ribbon-cutting ceremony was held to commemorate the many months of hard work and planning to complete this project.
The design of the newly decorated crosswalks was custom created by Tia Chuchas Centro Cultural Center and consists of 2 alternating patterns in 2 bright colors that are not only beautiful to look at but also provide high visibility to pedestrians who use it. These decorated crosswalks are installed in three locations:
- San Fernando Road and Paddock St
- San Fernando Road and Oro Grande St
- San Fernando Road and Astoria St
Tia Chuchas is seen as a hub and provides a sense of community for residents within the crosswalk. Funding for the project was provided by Council District 7, Monica Rodriguez, and cost a total of $162,300.
This project is part of a much larger project called Moving Beauty Pathways. The proposed project consists of
- bicycle path safety improvements (24 bicycle path bollard led lights) street furniture
- 1 transit shelter and 1 transit shade
- artistic installations ( 8 standalone structures to hold street murals along the bicycle path)
- crosswalk safety ( decorative and continental crosswalks, same intersections as above )
We’d like to thank BOE, City Planning, Council District 7, and the staff of Tia Chuchas Centro Cultural Center for partnering with us on this project and we look forward to the remainder of the treatments to come on the Moving Beauty Pathways.

Academy Awards Weekend
This weekend Los Angeles hosted the Academy Awards at the Dolby Theater. We want to thank our Special Traffic Operations team who come together to be sure the roads are still safe so that grand events like these go off without a hitch. Our LADOT STOs work behind the scenes and during late hours to make sure appropriate detours are securely blocked off and marked so that traffic can still flow efficiently. We also want to thank our LADOT traffic officers who are deployed along various routes to ensure safe travels. Thank you for helping to keep moving LA forward.

LADOT Now Hiring Crossing Guards
LADOT is now accepting applications for new Crossing Guards. Crossing guards keep students safe traveling to and from school and help educate and instill safe, alert walking behaviors in young Angelenos. Our crossing guards are placed at schools throughout the city and help provide experience and judgment to help children navigate a school crossing, while also increasing the visibility of their presence to drivers.
If you are interested in applying for a crossing guard position you can visit the website for the application and instructions on how to apply.

Celebrating Women's History Month: Olive Dennis
In 1920, Olive Dennis became the first female engineer hired by a major rail line. Her improvements to the Baltimore & Ohio train cars helped make rail travel more comfortable for women. After two years of working as a draftsman, Dennis was assigned to engineer an upgrade to the train’s interior. Dennis suggested improvements to make trains more comfortable for women, such as lower seats and larger dressing rooms. She also improved the lighting and air circulation in train cars.
