New COVID-19 Vaccination Site Deployed at USC

Last week, Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti announced the opening of the city’s newest vaccination site at the University of Southern California (USC). Located at the corner of Exposition Boulevard and Figueroa Street next to USC’s University Park campus, the site provides the capacity to vaccinate up to 5,000 people a day.

To expand access to the site and ensure Angelenos without a car can still get vaccinated, the city and the Mayor’s Fund for Los Angeles have partnered with Uber on a new initiative to provide 15,000 free rides — and another 20,000 rides half-off — to bring South L.A. residents to USC for their vaccination appointments.

“Equity drives every facet of our strategy to end the pandemic, but our efforts will come up short unless we shorten the distance between life-saving vaccines and our hardest-hit Angelenos,” said Mayor Garcetti. “Our City is determined to deliver doses to residents of South L.A. and every community — and our partnerships with both USC and Uber will enable us to get shots into the arms of thousands more Angelenos every day and move us closer to defeating COVID-19.”

The new vaccination center opened on Tuesday, March 9th, and operates daily from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Situated near the Expo Park Metro Station, the site comprises all seven levels of the Flower Street parking garage at Exposition Boulevard and Figueroa Street to accommodate drive ups, walk-ups, and patients who require additional access services.

To facilitate the deployment of this new vaccination site, LADOT Special Traffic Operations designed traffic patterns that support high vehicle volumes while minimizing the impact of traffic on the surrounding communities. The new location is now the second largest vaccine site operated by the City of Los Angeles, and boosts the city’s vaccination capacity from 27,000 to 32,000 doses per day.

Celebrating Women Who Have Transformed Transportation

March marks the commemoration of Women's History Month. Mary E. Landon

Taking her first solo trip in an automobile in the summer of 1899, Mary E. Landon holds the distinction of being among the earliest women in the United States to drive a gas powered car. Employed by the Haynes-Apperson Company in Kokomo, Indiana, which at the time manufactured automobiles, Landon was responsible for producing vehicle manuals for customers. This task allowed her to familiarize herself with vehicle operational functions, something which proved exceptionally useful when one day — after being asked to arrange the transport of a company car from downtown Kokomo to its place back to the factory — Landon took it upon herself to operate the automobile, and as a result drove the two-cylinder car and herself back to the Haynes-Apperson factory and into the history books.

The City of Los Angeles is getting to work on a safer, more connected San Vicente Boulevard between Olympic Boulevard and La Brea Avenue. To help inform members of the public about proposed changes to San Vicente Boulevard, LADOT will host a virtual workshop on the project on Thursday, March 11 from 10:00 a.m. - 11:30 a.m. All interested parties are invited to attend.
