Mayor Signs LADOT Speed Reduction Plan

This week Mayor Eric Garcetti signed the speed reduction proposal that will allow for LADOT to repeal and reduce speed limit increases on dozens of local streets. This life-saving proposal will reduce speeds by 5mph on over 177 miles of city streets that had previously been increased, as required by the state to ensure enforceability.

“Nothing is more important than the safety of our residents, and we need every tool at our disposal to ensure every decision we make prioritizes their well-being,” said Mayor Eric Garcetti. “The ability to manage speed limits locally is critical to reducing the risk of fatalities and serious injuries, and after a long fight at the state and local levels, this ordinance will help make our streets safer for everyone who uses them.”

The success of this proposal is a result of the passage of AB-43, a State bill led by Assemblymember Laura Friedman. Before its passage, the City was often required by the state to raise speed limits under the California Vehicle Code after speed surveys including on streets where no physical changes would merit such a change.

Road users can expect the installation of new, reduced speed limits to begin in one month. LADOT aims to complete all speed limit updates by June. The full list of streets where speed reductions will be implemented is available in this LADOT report. Under the new speed setting law, future reductions will be possible on streets with high rates of fatal or severe injury collisions as well as in areas with a high density of retail and commercial activity.

Women's History Month LADOT Spotlight: Tiffany Coleman

Women's History Month LADOT Spotlight: Tiffany Coleman

In celebration of Women’s History Month, this newsletter will recognize some of the women of LADOT that have been instrumental in working to keep Moving LA Forward.

It is our honor to acknowledge Tiffany Coleman who last year was recognized by the Los Angeles City Council's Transportation Committee as an LADOT Outstanding Performer. Tiffany’s usual duties support the For-Hire group. The skill and competence she has displayed resulted in her being asked to assist the Executive Team as well. Of her own accord, she has taken time out of her busy schedule to continue assisting the For-Hire group with any issues whether it be online systems, assisting Investigators with paperwork, or helping to process permits. She has been a consummate team player and embodies the LADOT Principles of having a problem-solving attitude and being reliable.

Thank you for your dedication.

Western Ave. Redesign Project Workshop

Western Ave. Redesign Project Workshop

The best way for us to make better improvements in your neighborhood is to hear it straight from you. Over the weekend we held a Redesign Project Workshop for Western Ave to give Angelenos a chance to take a look at the plans we have for the community and give their feedback and input on the design.

Attendees got an opportunity to learn about the details of the proposal and speak directly with staff about how to improve their commuting experience in the community. The Western Ave Redesign Project (WARP) aims to improve traffic safety for everyone who uses the street, as well as improve access to community destinations like schools and parks.

Let your voice be heard by taking this brief survey.

Play Streets Pops Up In Westlake

Play Streets Pops Up In Westlake

Play Streets popped up in the Westlake neighborhood this weekend. LADOT brought in the Box of Play and temporarily closed the streets to cars so that young residents can safely enjoy the space for play, learning, and fun with activities like blocks, chalk, jump ropes, and much more.

Play Streets are a partnership between LADOT and community-based organizations as well as local elected offices. We want to thank the non-profit Kounkuey Design Initiative (KDI), the Los Angeles Neighborhood Initiative, The Westlake South Neighborhood Council, 986 Pharmacy, and the Office of Councilmember Gil Cedillo for making this event possible.
