Western Our Way Safety Project

Thanks to your feedback and sharing your thoughts and experiences of how you travel on Western Ave, we have finished the project design phase for safety improvements on the “Western Our Way” Safety Project. This project seeks to make improvements along Western Ave from MLK Jr. Blvd to Century Blvd. Between 2010 and 2019, 136 severe and fatal collisions occurred on this section of Western Ave. Many of those occur due to high speeds and unprotected left turns.

We are committed to eliminating traffic deaths and addressing the long history of disinvestment and blight on Western. To do this LADOT has developed a strategy for Western Ave that will

  • Slow cars to reduce the likelihood of severe injury and death from a crash
  • Provide more frequent opportunities for safe crossing
  • Improve visibility and driver compliance at pedestrian crossings
  • Reduce weaving, sudden stops, and unprotected turns
  • Increase accessibility on the street for older adults, families, and others
  • Improve comfort and sense of safety while walking and waiting at bus stops

To achieve this we will be planning new safety features along the corridor such as curb extensions, protect left turn signals, pedestrian hybrid beacons, medians, speed tables, and much more. As well as features like street trees, pedestrian scale lighting and bus shelters that will make residents have a better and more comfortable experience while commuting. New HAWK Signal Installed at Melrose & Orange Drive

New HAWK Signal Installed at Melrose & Orange Drive

LADOT worked with Councilmember Paul Koretz to bring a new crosswalk and HAWK signal on Melrose Ave. and Orange Drive. The request for the new safety feature came from the Melrose Business Improvement District. Melrose is a heavily populated street with shopping, dining, and entertainment. The new crosswalk will improve walkability and access along the corridor while the HAWK signal will provide enhanced safety and visibility of pedestrians in the intersection. HAWK signals will flash when activated getting the attention of drivers that a pedestrian is crossing the street. The white continental crosswalk also helps pedestrians become much more visible to drivers.
