New Signal And Crosswalk at Oxnard & Variel In Woodland Hills

Last week our LADOT crews were in Woodland Hills installing a new full traffic signal and crosswalk at the intersection of Onxnard and Variel. This brand new traffic light is an instance in which local business owners made a request for the improvement after observing a need for safety improvements at the intersection which was previously an All-Way stop. LADOT was able to work with CD3 to find the funding and expedite the project. LADOT works with residents and community groups to deliver improvement projects to better improve the safety of Angelenos.

Al Fresco Artwork In Dining Spaces in Highland Park

LADOT manages the LA Al Fresco outdoor dining program to provide additional space for restaurants to serve customers in a safe outdoor environment. Recently, some of the on-street dining areas Highland Park received some great artwork to enhance and beautify the neighborhood. Our LADOT crews helped provide traffic control on North Figueroa as the Arroyo Arts Collective worked on the art display. With special thanks to the partnership of Council District 1, programs like LA Al Fresco help encourage more creative uses of our public spaces.

Speed Reductions Expand to More Neighborhoods

Lower speed limits continue to roll out in neighborhoods throughout Los Angeles. Over One month ago, LADOT began the process of lowering speed limits on certain streets as detailed in an ordinance adopted by the Los Angeles City Council following the passage of Assembly Bill 43 drafted by Assemblywoman Laura Friedman.

The state bill gives cities greater authority to set and in some cases reduce speed limits with an eye toward safety and the community's needs. Prior to the passage of this bill California historically has required cities to set their speed limits based on how fast 85% of drivers are already traveling. Here in LA, that system forced us to raise the speed limit on nearly 200 miles of streets, undermining our traffic safety goals.

Today, under the new bill LADOT’s current speed reduction plan will reduce speeds by 5mph on over 177 miles of city streets that had previously been increased. The map above shows where these speed limit reductions have been completed (green) and the streets where we will make reductions in the coming weeks (red).

The department aims to have all streets updated by the end of June. The full list of streets where speed reductions will be implemented is available in this LADOT report.

Celebrate this milestone with us this weekend at our Street Safety Celebration on June 4th at Harvard Park. This event is for everyone to enjoy free lunch, raffles, entertainment, and other activities. Councilmember Marqueece Harris-Dawson and city leaders will also be in attendance to speak more about the project and the in-coming improvements.
