School Out for Summer

School's Out for Summer!

The end of the school year is always an exciting time. As students head into summer break, they can look forward to long days of summer adventures with friends. During this time, young children can be expected to be out enjoying warm weather, riding bikes as well as walking and taking transit. It is important that motorists remain vigilant for these younger users of the public right of way and drive with safety in mind.

Even as thoughts of the next school year are far from students’ minds, we at LADOT are already making plans for improving road safety when they return to start the new academic year. This summer we are redoubling efforts from last summer to deliver traffic calming safety infrastructure near schools where speeding is an issue. We’ve identified 343 street segments near 201 schools where we will reduce speed limits to 15 mph. We’ll also be installing targeted infrastructure improvements like speed humps to reduce vehicle speeds and “No Right Turn on Red” restrictions to ensure drivers give students the right of way in intersections. And, as directed by City Council, LADOT is reassessing how it assigns crossing guard services to ensure guards are deployed equitably, and to locations across the City that need them the most. Taken together, these initiatives represent a comprehensive approach to ensure that the department’s resources and staff are deployed where they are needed most.

While kids enjoy a well-deserved break, LADOT will be hard at work preparing for the next school year with even more improvements in the pipeline. Until then, here’s to a fun, restful, and most importantly, safe summer for all!

LADOT Begins Installation of Avenue 64 Safety and Mobility Project

LADOT Begins Installation of Avenue 64 Safety and Mobility Project

Earlier this week, LADOT in coordination with StreetsLA began installation of the Avenue 64 Safety and Mobility Project. Avenue 64 is a residential street that connects the City of Los Angeles with the City of Pasadena. This project will add bidirectional bike lanes on N Avenue 64 between Church St and Meridian St, as well as a northbound bike lane on N Avenue 64 between Meridian St and York Blvd and a southbound bike lane on N Avenue 63 between Meridian St and York Blvd. The project will also replace faded stop signs and add crosswalks for additional safety improvements.

When complete, these improvements will add approximately 1.4 lane miles of bike lanes in total, calming traffic, encouraging cycling, and improving safety outcomes for all road users.

LADOT Presents at LACI Data Donuts Speaker Series

LADOT Presents at LACI's Data + Donuts Speaker Series

On May 22nd, LADOT Transportation Planning Associate Graham Rossmore, along with contractor Trellint, presented an inside look at the LA Express Park program to the Data + Donuts speaker series in Downtown LA, supported by the Los Angeles Cleantech Incubator (LACI).

The LA Express Park program manages parking occupancy data to increase rates when demand is high and decrease rates when demand is low, encouraging a balanced supply of parking spaces. The program currently operates in DTLA, Westwood Village, Hollywood and Venice. The Data + Donuts presentation summarized LADOT’s initial findings from the 2011 DTLA pilot, together with updated rates, technology, pricing engine, and the three additional LA Express Park zones. The presentation also provided updates on the City-wide expansion of Pay-by-Cell/mobile app payments and Text to Pay services.
