South LA Stress-Free Connections
Getting around your neighborhood shouldn’t be a hassle. That’s why LADOT launched South LA Stress Free Connections, a project focused on making it easier and safer to walk, bike, or roll through South LA. We’re working to connect residents to the places that matter most, schools, parks, job centers, and transit, by improving key corridors with thoughtful, people-first design.
From the very beginning, this project has been shaped by the people who live and travel through South LA. Between November 2021 and January 2022, we hit the ground, talking with community members through pop-ups, surveys, bike audits, and a hands-on design lab. Every comment, idea, and concern helped guide the designs we’re moving forward today.
We’re also proud to be working with two incredible partners, People for Mobility Justice (PMJ) and the Los Angeles Neighborhood Initiative (LANI). Their support and deep connection to the community have been essential in keeping this project grounded in local needs and priorities.
The improvements we are making are based on community surveys of people who walk and biked the route and shared their thoughts on building a safer, more connected South LA, together. Visit our website to learn more about the project.
LADOT Implements New Safety Upgrades in South LA
LADOT has installed 39 speed humps as part of the South LA Stress-Free Connections project, bringing new traffic-calming measures to 51st Street, Budlong Avenue, Hoover Street, and 50th Place. These improvements are designed to reduce speeding and create safer streets near homes, schools, and other important destinations.
Additional treatments, including leading pedestrian intervals, are scheduled for installation later in the summer.
This project is part of a broader effort to reduce traffic collisions and make it easier for South LA residents to reach schools, transit, and essential services. Improvements focus on calming traffic and enhancing access for people walking in areas where safety matters most.
The project was shaped by community input gathered through tabling events, bike audits, and a design lab held between November 2021 and January 2022. Local feedback helped identify priorities and shape the final design.
South LA Stress-Free Connections is a collaboration between LADOT and the South LA Eco-Lab, supported by the California Strategic Growth Council’s Transformative Climate Communities Program and the California Department of Conservation. Together, the partnership is building safer, more connected streets for South LA.

Share Your Feedback on the Spring St and Alameda St Safety and Mobility Project
LADOT is kicking off a new planning effort to improve safety and mobility along Spring St and Alameda St. These corridors connect neighborhoods to key destinations such as LA State Historic Park, Chinatown, Olvera Street, Union Station, Downtown LA, and the LA River Bike Path – but today, there are critical gaps in the transportation network and ongoing safety concerns for people walking, biking, and taking public transit.
If you live, work, or spend time in the project area, we want to hear from you! Your feedback will guide the types of improvements we consider and help us to better understand how the street can serve the needs of everyone.
Take our survey before September 8, 2025. Participants will be entered into a drawing for a chance to win one of two $50 gift cards.
Metro D Line Service Interruption Continues through July 25
Metro Los Angeles has announced that the Metro D (Purple) Line will be temporarily closed from the beginning of service on May 17 until the end of service on July 25. The closure is part of Phase I of the D Line Extension Project that will connect DTLA with the Westside.
During the closure, riders may use the following alternative routes:
- From Wilshire/Vermont to Union Station: Stations are also served by the Metro B (Red) Line. During the closure, B line trains will run every 8 minutes from 6:00 a.m. until 7:00 p.m. on weekdays and 7:00 a.m. until 7:00 p.m. on weekends. B Line trains will run every 12 minutes beginning at 7:00 p.m. and every 20 minutes beginning at 9:00 p.m.
- Wilshire/Normandie and Wilshire/Western: A Metro shuttle bus (Line 855) will connect riders between Wilshire/Vermont, Wilshire/Normandie, and Wilshire/Western. The shuttle bus will align with the B Line schedule and operate from 5:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. on weekdays, and from 6:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. on weeknights. Lines 720 and 20, which run along Wilshire Blvd, will continue their usual routes and may be used to travel between the D Line stations along Wilshire and to and from downtown LA (use 5th St heading westbound, and 6th St heading eastbound).
Both Metro B and D Line trains will resume regular schedules at the start of service on July 26. Learn more at Metro's The Source blog.
