Reconnecting MacArthur Park Phase 2

Reconnecting MacArthur Park Phase 2

Last week, we marked an important milestone for the future of the Westlake community - Phase 2 of the Reconnecting MacArthur Park study! Phase 1, launched with a $500,000 grant from the Southern California Association of Governments, explored options for closing Wilshire Boulevard in MacArthur Park to vehicle traffic, which would restore the park to its original state, and provide vital neighborhood open space

During Phase 1, we held 13 Community Advisory Committee meetings and 62 community events including open houses, dedicated focus groups for youth and seniors, and canvassing at community events. With the support project partners, we collected over 2,500 survey responses in both English and Spanish. The community responded clearly: Westlake residents and businesses want MacArthur Park restored. If realized, this will be the largest pedestrianization project in Los Angeles history! The study now moves into its next phase, led by the Bureau of Engineering, which will take this community's vision and develop it further.

You can get a preview of what Wilshire Boulevard would look like closed to vehicle traffic next week at CD 1’s Park to Park Community Event. On Friday, July 10 and Saturday, July 11, Wilshire Boulevard will be closed to cars in MacArthur Park, creating community space for a weekend of celebration and connection. Enjoy live music, vendors, resources, and a World Cup viewing party. Bring your family and friends and experience the magic that happens when we reimagine our City streets.

Free Transit Services in Boyle Heights to Support Fire Recovery

LADOT Announces Free Transit Services in Boyle Heights to Support Fire Recovery

As the City of Los Angeles continues recovery efforts following the June 17 Boyle Heights warehouse fire, LADOT is working to support the impacted community by making it easier for residents to travel around the neighborhood.

LADOT has paused fare collection on both the DASH Boyle Heights route and Cityride Dial-a-Ride services within Boyle Heights until the emergency declaration is lifted. Additional buses have been added to the DASH Boyle Heights, increasing service to every 10-15 minutes. A Cityride Dial-a-Ride van is standing by for seniors and persons with disabilities. Cityride participants can call (213, 323, 818)-808-7433 to request transportation. Details are available on the department's transit website.

Residents can use these transportation services to access the Community Resource Center, mobile health clinics, and more. For additional information about recovery updates in Boyle Heights including information about an upcoming community meeting, visit City's Emergency Management Department website

New Bike Lanes Coming to Terra Bella Street

New Bike Lanes Coming to Terra Bella Street

Construction has begun on the new bike lanes on Terra Bella Street. As construction of the East San Fernando Valley Light Rail Transit (ESFV LRT) Project progresses, Metro and LADOT are in the process of installing new Class II protected bike lanes on Terra Bella Street to replace the existing bike lanes along Van Nuys Boulevard that need to be removed to accommodate the future light rail train. The bike lanes will be constructed along Terra Bella Street between Wakefield Avenue and San Fernando Road, spanning approximately 2.5 miles.

The new bike lanes on Terra Bella St will change the street layout from two lanes in each direction to one lane in each direction, with added center turn lanes where space allows, making room for the new bike lanes. The changes to the street layout will also involve adjustments to on-street parking, adding parking spaces in some areas and removing them in others.

The new bike lanes and restriped crosswalks will provide a new bicycle connection to the existing San Fernando Bike Path, a calmer street for residents, and improved visibility and safety for pedestrians.

All Way Stop Installed in Glassell Park

All Way Stop Installed in Glassell Park

Following a request from Council District 1, LADOT recently installed an all-way stop sign at the intersection of Verdugo Road and Avenue 35 in Glassell Park. Previously, this intersection only had stop signs on Avenue 35, but the geometry of the street made it difficult for drivers on Avenue 35 to see oncoming traffic. The new stop signs improve safety for for drivers and pedestrians by calming traffic on Verdugo Road.
