Anniversary of the Palisades and Eaton Fires

Marking the One Year Anniversary of the Palisades and Eaton Fires

One year ago today, the air was thick with smoke as the Palisades and Eaton Fires spread rapidly, fueled by extreme wind speeds reaching up to 100 miles per hour. What began as a dangerous situation quickly became life-altering for many, forcing families to evacuate. Homes were lost, neighborhoods were forever changed, and while much progress has been made, some families are still displaced today.

Many LADOT staff were personally affected by both the fires and its aftermath. Some were themselves forced to evacuate their homes during the fire. Others like our Traffic Officers and Special Traffic Operations worked closely with first responders throughout the emergency. Paint & Sign and Signal crews were in the Palisades within days to repair damaged infrastructure. And staff throughout the department were reassigned as Disaster Service Workers taking on roles very different from their usual assignments to help victims recover. To this day, our teams remain involved in recovery efforts, supporting rebuilding and closures during potentially hazardous events such as the recent rain storm.

This anniversary serves as an important reminder about preparedness. Emergencies can escalate quickly, and having a plan matters. Angelenos are encouraged to stay informed through trusted resources like LA’s Emergency Management Department where you can sign up for emergency alerts and find out how to keep an emergency kit on hand. Preparedness is a shared responsibility, and together, we can help ensure Los Angeles is ready, no matter what comes our way.

Last Chance to Take Several LADOT Community Surveys

Last Chance to Take Several LADOT Community Surveys

As LADOT prepares to implement safety and design changes in neighborhoods across Los Angeles, we want to hear what improvements you would like to see where you live, work, and play. Share what matters most to you before the following surveys close:

  • Ohio Avenue Safety and Mobility Project: This project will add a two-way protected bike lane on Ohio Ave between Westgate Avenue and Westwood Boulevard, along with neighborhood traffic calming on Westgate, Rochester, Saltair, and Texas Avenues. Complete the short survey to learn more about the planned upgrades and tell us how they work for you before January 15.
  • Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard Safety and Mobility Project: LADOT, in partnership with Metro, is planning traffic safety improvements along this vital corridor. Community outreach began in 2022 to gather input and shape the project, and now we are sharing the final community informed design. We invite you to share your input by January 16.
  • South Broadway Safety and Mobility Project: LADOT is planning safety and mobility improvements along a 3.5-mile stretch of Broadway in South LA, from Manchester Avenue to Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard. This project aims to improve street safety and transportation access with investments that benefit all road users, including those who walk, bike, take transit, and drive. Take the survey by January 18 to help LADOT understand your safety concerns, access challenges, and ideas for how Broadway could function better for everyone

Each survey takes just a few minutes, but provides valuable feedback at LADOT seeks to improve travel for all Angelenos. Thank you for helping us move LA forward!
