LADOT Honors Black History Month
February marks the celebration of Black History Month here in Los Angeles, when we highlight the historic achievements and continuing contributions of Black Angelenos - from innovators in transportation and infrastructure to leaders in science, politics, and the arts.
In Los Angeles, this impact is seen in the fight for civil rights, the push for equitable access to transportation options, and the continued work to build a more inclusive city. From the activists who fought for desegregated transit to today’s leaders advocating for more equitable transportation policies, environmental justice, and accessibility for all, these contributions continue to influence the way cities move. LADOT remains committed to ensuring transportation serves all communities by expanding mobility and investing in historically underserved areas.
Throughout this month we will recognize the places, policies, and people of LADOT who share this heritage and continue the legacy of these contributions. We hope you will follow along and join us in celebrating Black History Month!

Dorothy Tate, Supervising Transportation Planner
Dorothy works in the Parking Permits Division facilitating the establishment of Preferential Parking Districts, Overnight Parking Districts, and Oversize Vehicle Restricted Areas. Born and raised in LA, Dorothy is a true Angeleno and is now raising her own family in the City.
Dorothy began her career at LADOT in 1998. Her deep desire to grow and serve others has been her true inspiration and working in the field of transportation has given her the opportunity to do that. During her time as a Supervising Transportation Planner, she is proud to have been able to serve residents, especially in Black communities. Dorothy recalls a time when she helped establish a Preferential Parking District in a Black community of Los Angeles that provided much needed parking relief so residents could enjoy where they live.
Dorothy’s pride in working in transportation extends to her excitement for Los Angeles hosting the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games. She emphasizes that the City’s rich diversity, particularly among people of African descent, makes it a welcoming place for visitors from all backgrounds. By investing in infrastructure ahead of the Games and celebrating cultural vibrancy, she believes Los Angeles can deliver an inclusive and unforgettable experience.
When asked about what she loves about Los Angeles, Dorothy answered, “Los Angeles is all that I know. I love being able to make a positive difference… by doing the work that I do. There's a song entitled ‘I Love LA’ and it's true!”
