LADOT General Manager Announces Celebrates Transit Equity Day

LADOT Celebrates Transit Equity Day

This week marks the start of African American Heritage Month, and today–February 4–transit agencies across the country mark Transit Equity Day, celebrated on the birthday of Rosa Parks. In 1955, Parks’s courageous refusal to give up her seat on a segregated bus led to the Montgomery bus boycott, which persisted for over a year until the U.S. Supreme Court ruled bus segregation unconstitutional.

Transit Equity Day highlights the critical role safe and dignified transit plays in daily life and access to opportunity. Despite the progress we’ve made since Rosa Parks rode the bus, many riders still face barriers to travel due to systemic marginalization, cost burdens, and other forms of exclusion. After years of building freeways through low-income neighborhoods, many of these communities still lack connectivity and bear the brunt of air pollution.

In recognition of Transit Equity Day, LADOT is providing fare free rides on all services. And because achieving transit equity will take a lot more than just one day, LADOT is also continuing to deliver programs informed by and designed to meet the needs of the communities we serve. The Universal Basic Mobility pilot program is bringing investments to the historically underserved area of South LA. Our Zero Emission Delivery Zones pilot is encouraging emissions-free deliveries in DTLA. And we’re building a new zero emission transit maintenance facility in Harbor City, which will enable LADOT to deploy a fully-electric bus fleet across our entire transit network.

Together, we can build a future where transit is truly equitable for all.

Share Your Feedback on the Marmion Way Safety and Mobility Project

LADOT is planning safety improvements to Marmion Way, a quiet, low-volume street running through Northeast Los Angeles. This project will close a critical gap in the City’s bike network between Avenue 50 and Figueroa Street and provide a direct connection for cyclists to the Metro A Line Southwest Museum station.

If you live, work, or travel through the project area, LADOT wants to hear from you. Take the Marmion Way project survey by March 13, 2026 and let us know the safety treatments you would like to see.

LADOT outreach teams will also be hosting a design workshop at the Ramona Hall Community Center, 4580 N Figueroa St, on Wednesday, February 18, 2026 between 6:00-7:00 PM. Join us to learn more about the potential bikeway designs and share your feedback. Visit Marmion Way project website to learn more
