Los Angeles Awarded $200 Million+ In Grant Awards For Active Transportation Projects

Multiple active transportation projects in Los Angeles are receiving funding after the city was awarded state grants for 6 different projects totaling over $200 million. The grants were approved by a vote of the  California Transportation Commission as part of the State of California's Active Transportation program which supports transformative transportation projects that encourage transportation through active modes such as walking, biking, and taking transit.

The six projects stretch across the city from the Northeast Valley to the Harbor area. Below is a list of the projects awarded: 

• Skid Row Connectivity and Safety Project ($38.6 million)
• Osborne Street: Path to Park Access Project ($42.3 million)
• Normandie Beautiful: Creating Neighborhood Connections in South LA ($23.58 million)
• Wilmington Safe Streets – A people-first approach ($32.33 million)
• Western our Way: Walk and Wheel Improvements ($37.74 million)
• LA River Greenway: East San Fernando Valley Gap Closure ($34.4 million)

New Bus Priority Lanes Coming To Venice Blvd, and Alvarado St.

LADOT and Metro have begun installing priority bus lanes on two major streets in Los Angeles. Earlier this month, implementation will begin on Venice Blvd, and Alvarado St. This collaboration is a part of Metro’s Next Gen Bus Plan. 

As part of the Venice Blvd project, LADOT will install dedicated bus-only lanes. The lane will operate along Venice Blvd between the segments of Inglewood Blvd and Bledsoe Ave in the eastbound direction, and between Tilden Ave and Culver Blvd in both directions. The bus-only lanes are just the beginning of this project. Phase 2 will include more feature enhancements including bus boarding islands, transit amenities, and other high-quality transportation corridors. 

The new bus lanes on Alvarado Street will extend already existing bus-only lanes on Alvarado from the 101 freeway to Sunset Boulevard and will be in operation on weekdays only, southbound from 7-10 am and northbound from 3-7 pm.

Each of these locations is vital to residents' daily commute with Alvarado street having 12,100 daily weekday boardings, and Venice having 19,500. We are excited to partner with Metro to help speed up transit services and bring reliable transportation to Los Angeles.

LADOT Brings Play Streets To Panorama City

This weekend LADOT partnered with Casa Esperanza and Pacoima Beautiful to bring Play Streets to residents and kids in Panorama City. We were able to transform the block into a safe and enjoyable space for play, relaxation, conversation, and more! Those in attendance were able to enjoy fun activities, as well as live music, food, and beverages as well as connect with community-based organizations. 

We recognize that safe streets and public spaces play a major role in what creates thriving neighborhoods and look forward to bringing this program to other neighborhoods throughout Los Angeles.

LA Al Fresco Program Extended

This week we notified small businesses participating in the LA Al Fresco outdoor dining program of an extension of existing permits until. The program is moving into a new phase and authorizations are being extended until May 31, 2023. 

The LA Al Fresco program was introduced in May 2020 during the height of the pandemic as a way to aid owners of local food establishments who were adversely impacted by Covid-19 due to the related public health restrictions. The program promoted public health by providing opportunities for LA residents to enjoy restaurant dining in locations where the risk of exposure to the coronavirus was minimized. Due to the program's success, we are working hard to ensure a streamlined transition to a permanent program.

On Saturday, December 10th, LADOT co-hosted a Play Streets event on Blythe Street in Panorama City between Van Nuys Blvd. and Willis St. During this event, LADOT closed the street to traffic as we transformed the block into a place for play, relaxation, and conversation in support of healthy communities.
