Looking Back on a Year of Accomplishment
As 2024 starts to wind down, LADOT is looking back on our accomplishments this year. I’d like to take this opportunity to thank the hardworking teams that made big things happen in Los Angeles this past year.
This year LADOT implemented major projects that will improve safety, sustainability, access, and the transportation experience across the region. Our Vision Zero team brought the Hollywood Blvd Safety & Mobility project to life with protected bike lanes and a new center turn lane. Through our partnership with Metro, LADOT field crews installed 22 miles of bus lanes on Roscoe Blvd. And the LADOT transit division recently purchased a new transit yard in Harbor City which, when complete, will enable us to run a fully-electric bus fleet.
LADOT’s efforts can be seen across the city. Our capital projects teams continued implementing major improvements including dozens of new traffic signals and almost 500 new speed humps and speed tables. Our advanced planning teams secured significant grants for projects that will transform our City like Safe Streets 4 All and Reconnecting MacArthur Park. And multiple divisions supported our unprecedented school safety efforts installing hundreds of safety treatments near schools like speed humps, speed limit reduction, and intersection improvements helping ensure children are safe on our streets as they travel to and from school. This was the first full year of LADOT services on 311, providing LA residents greater access to the services provided by our District Engineers, ATSAC signal operations teams, and crews.
Whether we were cheering for the Dodgers at the Championship Parade or biking with friends and family at a CicLAvia or CicLAmini, LADOT helped LA turn out. LADOT Traffic Officers and Special Traffic Operations teams worked hard to support the unique events that make LA a City like no other.
Thanks to all of our LADOT teams who kept our City moving in 2024!
Mayor Karen Bass Tours LADOT Transit Yard
LADOT was honored to welcome Mayor Karen Bass to our DTLA transit yard last Friday. Mayor Bass was celebrating the City’s recent sustainability accomplishments, including the finalization of a purchase of a new LADOT zero-emission transit maintenance facility in Harbor City. This new solar-powered facility will be able to charge 140 electric DASH buses, more than doubling the number of zero-emission vehicles LADOT can deploy citywide. Once the yard is complete, LADOT will have the capacity to deploy a fully-electric bus fleet across our entire transit network.
LADOT thanks Mayor Bass for her commitment to helping our department meet our sustainability goals. Under Mayor Bass’s leadership, LA is leading the charge to reduce emissions with green infrastructure and transportation
LADOT Awarded $6M Safe Streets Grant
LADOT is proud to announce that we have been awarded a $6 million Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation! This funding is a significant step toward making Los Angeles safer and more accessible for everyone ahead of the 2028 Summer Olympic and Paralympic Games and beyond.
The grant will support the Pedestrianization of Roadways for LA28 and Beyond initiative, a collaborative effort with the Southern California Association of Governments (SCAG). This project focuses on creating safer streets along some of LA’s busiest corridors, which have a history of pedestrians and bicyclist collisions, including the following:
• Figueroa Street (Pico Blvd to Jefferson Blvd)
• Hollywood Boulevard (Highland Ave to Orange Dr)
• Wilshire Boulevard (Alvarado St to Lafayette Park Pl)
These semi-permanent pedestrianization projects will prioritize walking, biking, and public transit while accommodating the high volumes of travel expected during major events like the 2028 Summer Olympics, 2027 Super Bowl, and 2026 World Cup.
The $6 million grant will cover critical aspects of the initiative, including planning and design, community outreach, equipment procurement, installation of safety measures and project evaluation. These efforts will create safer, more walkable streets while establishing best practices for future infrastructure projects in Los Angeles!
Text-to-Pay Parking Launches in Larchmont and Little Tokyo
Text-to-pay parking is now available in both Larchmont and Little Tokyo! This new feature provides Angelenos with a convenient new way to pay at parking meters by texting a code and receiving a link to pay via mobile phone. With text-to-pay, drivers can also receive notifications when their meter is expiring.
Text-to-pay is proving to be a popular feature. Shortly after the launch in Larchmont, text-to-pay accounted for over 23% of transactions. LADOT is in the process of expanding this payment method to other areas of the City, with the ultimate goal of making text-to-pay at parking meters available City-wide.
CicLAvia Brings Open Streets to the Valley
Thanks to all who came out to enjoy five miles of open streets on Sherman Way last weekend at CicLAvia: The Valley! The last open streets event of 2024 was a joyful occasion as Angelenos biked, walked, skated, and rolled through the Reseda, Winnetka, and Canoga Park neighborhoods. LADOT staff were on hand to talk about the nearby protected bike lanes on Reseda and hear feedback about what other safety improvements the community would like to see.
LADOT is excited to continue partnering with CicLAvia on open streets events in 2025! Visit ciclavia.org to sign up for CicLAvia’s mailing list and be the first to know when future routes are announced.
LADOT Transit Visits OCTA
LADOT Transit recently conducted their first Transit Day event since 2019. This year, LADOT visited the OCTA bus maintenance facility in Santa Ana, learning about bus yard layout, maintenance, safety, and bus driver amenities. LADOT Transit will put this information to use when building a new electric bus maintenance facility in Harbor City. Thanks to the OCTA team for hosting our Transit team on Transit Day!
