Making LA Streets Safer for Seniors

Making LA's Streets Safer for Seniors

I’m excited to share that LADOT recently completed safety assessments in five neighborhoods prioritized for our Safe Routes for Seniors pilot program, an initiative created to better understand and support how older Angelenos travel. The department has developed plans and installed initial improvements across these five areas, identified as having a higher proportion of elderly residents: Chinatown, Rancho Park, South LA, Exposition/Crenshaw, and Downtown LA.

We worked closely with seniors, caregivers, and community partners to understand daily mobility challenges, mapped key destinations, observed difficult crossings, and studied where improvements like smoother sidewalks, better lighting, safer intersections, and added shade or seating could improve the travel experience. This work is especially meaningful because older adults represent a disproportionate share of victims in traffic crashes, making it essential that our projects prioritize their safety, comfort, and mobility.

With the initial assessments complete, we’re proud to share that one third of the recommended improvements have already been installed. These early upgrades include safety enhancements like adding stop signs, high visibility crosswalks, increased crossing times at intersections, and turn-signals to prevent conflicts. The program results including reports for each neighborhood assessment are now available on Safe Routes for Seniors website.

Closure of Section of PicoBoulevard Through March 2028

City Announces Closure of Section of Pico Boulevard Through March 2028

The City of Los Angeles announced last week that as part of the $2.6 billion LA Convention Center Expansion and Modernization Project, Pico Boulevard will be closed between LA Live Way and Figueroa Street beginning Thursday, December 4, 2025. The closure will be in place until March 31, 2028.

The closure will be 24 hours, 7 days a week to allow for the construction of the LACC expansion structure over Pico Boulevard, which will connect the existing South and West Exhibit Halls.

Eastbound vehicles, cyclists, and pedestrians will be detoured north onto LA Live Way, east on Olympic Blvd, and south on Figueroa St to continue on to Pico Blvd. Traveling westbound, vehicles, cyclists, and pedestrians will be detoured south on Figueroa St, west on Venice Blvd, and north on Union Ave.

Metro Line 30 serving Pico Blvd will be detoured between Union Ave and Figueroa St. During the closure, buses will detour north and southbound on Union Ave, west and eastbound on Olympic Blvd, and north and southbound on Figueroa St. Visit Metro’s website for details of stops along the detour.

Please allow extra time if you plan to travel through the area and obey all Traffic Officer instructions.
