LADOT Publishes Bilingual Glossary of Transportation Terms

LADOT is proud to present the first edition of our Bilingual Glossary of Transportation Terms. We know that to better serve our community, accessibility is important. With this first-of-its-kind glossary, our goal is to remove the language barrier that Spanish-speaking communities face when interacting with government agencies. With this new tool, technical terminology will be more accessible to Angelenos allowing them to advocate their needs and ensure we make investments that meet them.

In 2020-2022, LADOT collaborated with LA Walks, community members, transportation and planning practitioners, advocates, and others to develop LADOT’s first Spanish glossary. It includes over 100 engagement terms commonly used in transportation planning translated into both English and Spanish. In creating this first edition, our staff received feedback from dedicated professionals who work in transportation planning and advocacy as well as comments from thirty-two Spanish-speaking community members under Los Angeles Walks.

We are so grateful to these community leaders for their time and experience to ensure the usefulness of this document. We expect this document to be updated continuously as we receive feedback from communities and as our toolkit evolves. Partners, community members, and colleagues are encouraged to use this glossary and help keep moving LA forward to improve street safety for everyone.

AAPI Heritage Month Staffer Spotlight -- Joan Hsu

As we celebrate Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month, this week we want to spotlight members of our staff who as part of LADOT, keep our city moving.

Meet Joan Hsu. Joan currently works in Transit Facilities as a Transportation Engineering Associate III. She is a lifelong Angeleno whose family first came to Los Angeles from Taiwan in the late 80’s to pursue higher education. Inspired by her father to work in transportation, she was fascinated as a young child by all the behind-the-scenes work it takes to make sure a system runs efficiently.

Read more about Joan's story and her experience of Los Angeles.

New Signal and Updates on Florence Avenue

New Signal and Updates on Florence Avenue

New safety upgrades have arrived on Florence! A new traffic signal at the intersection of 5th and 4th Avenue and Florence Ave helps create a smoother traffic flow. We've also added continental crosswalks and curb ramps that improve visibility and access for pedestrians in Hyde Park.

Council Districts Tour LADOT’s State Of The Art ATSAC Center

Last week LADOT gave Councilwoman Nithya Raman and staff members of Council District 4 and staff members of Council District 11 an inside look at our state-of-the-art ATSAC (Advanced Transportation Systems and Coordination) center. ATSAC is the central hub for citywide traffic control systems allowing LADOT to manage and improve the efficiency of travel throughout the city. Our new center allows for more space for a larger team of specialists to work together and prepare for major events.

The original ATSAC was established in 1984 to prepare for the 84’ Olympics and the system only managed 118 signals. Today our ATSAC system manages 4,580 traffic signals and can handle large-scale events like the upcoming 2026 World Cup and 2028 Olympics. Other functions of today’s system include adaptive traffic signal control to react to changing traffic conditions, real-time data on congestion and signal malfunction, and the capability to provide prioritization for buses, rail, and pedestrians as well as manage bike signals throughout the city. No matter how Angelenos decide to commute, our state-of-art facility ensures that LADOT can manage the large events in the city as well as the everyday travel experience.

National Bike Month Bike Lane Of The Week: Anaheim Bike Lane

Enjoy a ride along the newly installed bike lanes on Anaheim Street. The recently redesigned street includes new bike lanes that help increase safety and comfort with green boxes that give better visibility for riders and drivers. We’ve also installed protected turn lanes for cyclists along Anaheim at McDonald Ave, Lagoon Ave, and Lakme Ave.

LADOT prioritized bicycle lane improvements along Anaheim due to it being the location of a high number of collisions. The 2.2 miles of improvements between Figueroa St and Henry Ford Ave will reduce conflicts between bikers and drivers and ensure a more comfortable experience for all.

CicLAmini Coming To Watts

Celebrate Central Avenue Improvements at CicLamini in Watts

This Sunday join us as we celebrate Central Avenue improvements at  CicLAmini in Watts. Over the past year, there has been lots of construction activity on Central Avenue. We’re adding the finishing touches on the Watts Central Avenue project which has brought improvements like a new street design, sidewalk improvements, pedestrian crossings, and bike lanes between Century Blvd and Imperial Highway.

On Sunday, May 21st from 9 am to 3 pm enjoy a one-mile ride stretch of car-free streets in Watts. Central Ave will be transformed into a public park for the day where participants can jog, ride, skate, spectate, or enjoy the route in any way that they choose. CicLAmini is a pedestrian-focused experience. There will be activities popped up all along the 1-2 mile route such as self-guided walking tours, scavenger hunts, games, art, and much more! Come enjoy the day and stop by the LADOT hub to hear about the Watts Central Ave project and get your questions answered about this and other related projects in the area.

LADOT Now Hiring Crossing Guards

LADOT Now Hiring Crossing Guards

LADOT is now accepting applications for new Crossing Guards. Crossing guards keep students safe traveling to and from school and help educate and instill safe, alert walking behaviors in young Angelenos. Our crossing guards are placed at schools throughout the city and help provide experience and judgment to help children navigate a school crossing, while also increasing the visibility of their presence to drivers.

If you are interested in applying for a crossing guard position you can visit the website for the application and instructions on how to apply.
