As we head into the Holiday season, I want to take this moment to express my gratitude for the opportunity to serve as the General Manager at LADOT, alongside the women and men of this department who dedicate themselves everyday to improving the lives of Angelenos. At LADOT, our greatest joy is in bringing people together, and I hope you are able to spend this season connecting with family, friends, and neighbors.

So on behalf of all of us at LADOT, here's wishing you and your loved ones a joyous holiday season filled with warmth, happiness, and safe travels.

Installation Begins for Safety Treatments at Young Oak Kim Academy

This week, LADOT is excited to get to work on safety treatments at Young Oak Kim Academy. Throughout the year, we've been installing school safety zones by lowering speed limits and introducing traffic calming measures such as speed humps and curb extensions to ensure students have safe access to schools across Los Angeles.

At Young Oak Kim Academy, our Safe Routes to School team worked with school staff on an ambitious safety project to redirect traffic patterns including a dedicated lane for orderly drop-off and pick up as well as additional safety elements and reduce vehicle speeds in one of the most traffic impacted communities in Los Angeles. These treatments will benefiting all students especially those who walk, bike/skateboard, or use public transit to commute to and from school. Nearly 60 percent of Young Oak Kim Academy students walk or take transit to and from school.

In October, the Los Angeles Department of Transportation (LADOT), in partnership with Young Oak Kim Academy and the Los Angeles School Police, initiated a one-day pop-up installation of new vehicle traffic patterns in front of the school. This pop-up installation served as a platform for data collection and community feedback to familiarize the school community with upcoming design changes. Final construction began earlier this week and the updated street design and traffic pattern adjustments will be fully implemented when students return to school on January 8, 2024.

Farewell to Chief of Staff Bridget Smith Upon Her Retirement

Img Farewell to Chief of Staff Bridget Smith This week LADOT, bid a fond farewell to Chief of Staff Bridget Smith who earlier this month announced her retirement after 30+ year career in transportation policymaking. Since starting LADOT in 2015, Bridget has been an indispensable asset who has made a lasting impact on the department. Her dedication to addressing LADOT's staffing needs and fostering a positive work culture has made our workplace more fulfilling for all.

Bridget is a transportation engineer by training. However, at LADOT, Bridget's legacy will be defined by her efforts to make LADOT a more inclusive and fulfilling workplace as well as helping lead the department through the COVID-19 pandemic as the city imposed early retirements, a hiring freeze, and then subsequently required rapid restaffing during recovery. We appreciate her calm, dedicated leadership and impact in making LADOT a great place to work.

Celebrating Signal Upgrades in the NE Valley

This week, we worked alongside Councilwoman Monica Rodriguez in CD 7 to celebrate the activation of a new Pedestrian Hybrid Beacon at the intersection of Paxton St. & Haddon Ave. This new signal improves pedestrian safety and access to a nearby park and schools in the vicinity by allowing people walking across the intersection to activate a signal that requires drivers to stop. Pedestrians also receive a walk signal indicating when it is safe to cross. The location also received new continental crosswalks on the north and south of Haddon Ave and four new curb ramps to be installed for ADA compliance.

This project is the first activation of a package funded by a Federal grant to make signal upgrades LADOT to 9 intersections in the area. In addition to signals, the upgrades include enhanced, high-visibility continental crosswalks, ADA-accessible curb ramps at some intersections where they are lacking, and the addition of a pedestrian island at Chatsworth Dr. & Los Alimos Street. New Signal Activated at Intersection of Virgil, Silverlake, and Temple

LADOT recently installed a new left turn signal in CD 13 at the convergence of Temple Street, Virgil Ave, and Silverlake Blvd. The three streets that come together at this intersection are major corridors all supporting a substantial volume of vehicles, which significantly complicates the safe movement of vehicles and people through this intersection The introduction of this left turn signal will reduce the potential for conflicts.

As part of the City's Vision Zero Program, LADOT analyzes collision data to collaborate with council offices in taking proactive measures to reduce speeds and create more comfortable crossings for active modes of travel, such as biking and walking.

Now Hiring: Crossing Guards

LADOT is now accepting applications for new Crossing Guards. Crossing guards keep students safe traveling to and from school and help educate and instill safe, alert walking behaviors in young Angelenos. Our crossing guards are placed at schools throughout the city and help provide experience and judgment to help children navigate a school crossing, while also increasing the visibility of their presence to drivers.
