Midblock Crossings Safety Upgrade

At LADOT, we’re always looking for new ways to make our streets safer and easier to navigate. I’m excited to share that our signal operations staff recently updated the signal pattern for all of the City’s midblock pedestrian signals (crosswalk signals you often see in the middle of a block, where people can cross safely without an intersection) to improve driver compliance and pedestrian safety.

So, what’s new? In the past, when someone pushed the button to cross, drivers would see a flashing red light for the full crossing phase. Now, when...

Pico Boulevard Safety & Mobility Project

If you’ve been on Pico Boulevard between Crenshaw and Figueroa, you know it’s a lively, well-traveled street that connects many neighborhoods in our city. It’s also a street where we can make things a lot safer and easier for everyone to get around! That’s why we’re working on the Pico Boulevard Safety and Mobility Plan, to reimagine Pico in a way that works better for the people who use it most.

Your voice is one of the most important parts of this project - it’s the people who live, work, and travel along Pico every day who know...

Spring/Alameda Safety & Mobility Project

At LADOT, we work to design streets that are safe and accessible for all modes of travel. That’s why we are getting to work on the Spring/Alameda Safety & Mobility Project, an effort to fill mobility gaps for two of Downtown LA’s busiest corridors. Spring Street and Alameda Street is a crucial corridor between residential neighborhoods to the east, jobs in Downtown LA, and the central regional transit hub of Union Station.

This project will reimagine Spring Street and Alameda Street with your mobility needs in mind. But to do...

Back to School: Keeping Kids Safe on LA Streets

The first day of school can be both exciting and intimidating for students as they navigate a new class schedule, or even a new school. At LADOT, we have been hard at work to make sure that navigating how to get to and from campus is the least of their concerns.

For the last two years, we’ve added local funding and investment expanding on the grant-funded Safe Routes to School program to develop and implement a comprehensive safety plan for all schools in Los Angeles. By prioritizing streets and intersections with the highest...

First Phase of Peak-Hour Lane Removal is Underway

Keep an eye out for safer streets and better parking! In the coming months, Angelenos and businesses may notice more street parking in their neighborhood. As directed by the City Council, LADOT is removing peak-hour travel lanes and restoring full-time parking on streets that see a low volume of peak-hour traffic. This will mean fewer roads where residents have to move their car for rush hour every weekday, less circling for parking for visitors, and an overall safer flow of traffic for all.

Phase 1 of the peak-hour lane...

Closing the Imperial Highway Bike Lane Gap

LADOT is proud to announce that we’ve closed the bike lane gap on Imperial Highway!

Until now, roadway width and the median on Imperial Highway prohibited LADOT from connecting a 1,000 foot gap east of Pershing Dr. This forced bicyclists to choose between riding in vehicle traffic or on the sidewalk, competing with pedestrians for safe infrastructure.

Thanks to a Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality (CMAQ) grant, crews were able to modify the median island and widen the road to close the gap with Class II protected bike lanes....

Mobility Wallet Phase II Has Begun!

Over the last few weeks, 2,000 participants in Los Angeles County received debit cards pre-loaded with $1,800 that can be used on transportation options that work for them and their families. This grant funded program, made possible by the State of California’s Sustainable Transportation Equity Program, is the largest transit subsidy program nation and can be used to pay for transportation services such as public transit, rideshare, bikes, scooters, and more.

This second phase follows a successful pilot that provided similar support to 1,000...

Breaking Ground on the Mid-City Greenway

Yesterday, along with Council District 5 and our community partners, LADOT broke ground on the Mid-City Greenway! The Mid-City Neighborhood Greenways project will bring traffic calming measures and safety treatments to create a safe, shared space for pedestrians and cyclists.

The new treatments to be installed on the over four miles of project area on Rosewood Ave, Formose Ave, and Orange Dr include bike boxes, crossworks, and curb extensions and are designed to discourage cut-through commuter traffic on our residential streets....

South LA Stress-Free Connections

Getting around your neighborhood shouldn’t be a hassle. That’s why LADOT launched South LA Stress Free Connections, a project focused on making it easier and safer to walk, bike, or roll through South LA. We’re working to connect residents to the places that matter most, schools, parks, job centers, and transit, by improving key corridors with thoughtful, people-first design.

From the very beginning, this project has been shaped by the people who live and travel through South LA. Between November 2021 and January 2022, we hit the ground...

Happy Fourth of July from LADOT

As we celebrate the 4th of July this week– a day rooted in America’s promise of freedom– we are reminded of the foundations of that freedom, including our constitutional rights to due process and self-expression. This year, the very basis of that freedom is being challenged on our own city streets, reminding us that we can never take the promise of this country for granted.

Whether you choose to mark the day with fireworks, barbecues, or exercising your First Amendment rights, make safety a priority, and let LADOT help you get where you'...
