LADOT Joins New Los Angeles Charter School For Walktober

This week we celebrated Walktober with students attending New Los Angeles Charter School. LADOT General Manager Connie LLanos  and CD 10 Councilmember Heather Hutt joined representatives from LAPD and the school to meet the students at different points on their route to school. This event highlights the importance of safety for children who walk or bike to school.

The school is located at intersection of Washington & Burnside which was the site of a severe crash in 2019. Following the crash, parents and students advocated for a traffic signal and crosswalk to be installed at the location. Thanks to their advocacy, LADOT was able to install a signal and crosswalk at the intersection and in September 2020.

Creating conditions that allow students and parents feel safe and comfortable on their route to and from school is a top priority for LADOT. Neighborhoods where children can walk to school are healthy neighborhoods. Since 2014, LADOT's Safe Routes to School program has $78 million in grant funding to promote projects like those at New Los Angeles Charter. We thank them for their partnership and passion to creating safe walking and biking conditions for students.

New Updates On The Northvale Gap Closure

New Updates On The Northvale Gap Closure

We have some updates on the progress of our project to close the gap on for the Exposition II Bike Path. As of August 2022, the project design has reached the 70% milestone. This new design will close the existing gap in the Expo Bike Path, completing a continuous bike facility that generally runs parallel to the Expo Line from Culver City to Santa Monica.

To achieve this the project proposes:

  • A two-way Bike Path from Motor Avenue to Dunleer Drive with a dedicated pedestrian facility fully separated from the street.
  • Two-way Bike Path along the south side of Northvale Road, between Dunleer Drive and Putney Road, fully separated by a raised curb and steel cable fencing, providing a safe comfortable bicycling environment.
  • New Access Points at Motor Avenue, Dunleer Drive, Bradbury Road, and Putney Road with curb extensions and ADA ramps.
  • New Traffic Signal at the Motor Avenue bike path entrance, bicycle lane turn pocket, and crosswalks to allow for a safe connection for pedestrians and bicyclists from Motor Avenue.
  • New Bikeway Lighting to ensure a safe walking and bicycling experience after dark.

Construction is anticipated to begin in the Spring of 2024. Learn more about this project.
