Assembly Bill 645 Promoting Speed Safety Becomes Law in California
Earlier this year, Assemblymember Laura Friedman introduced AB 645, which would enable the City of Los Angeles and five other cities to create five-year Automated Speed Enforcement pilot programs. Speed safety cameras are a crucial Vision Zero tool that have proven effective in reducing injuries and saving lives, as well as offering an alternative to police traffic stops. This week, Governor Newsom signed the bill into law.
LADOT will now begin the process of coordinating with City Council and communities to implement speed safety cameras equitably in school zones and along roads with a high rate of injury.
LADOT thanks Governor Newsom, Assemblymember Friedman, and all the tireless advocates who made this legislation possible.
Endeavour Solid Rocket Motors Arrive in South LA
Welcome Home! The arrival of the Endeavour solid rocket motors (SRMs) to the California Science Center on October 11 brought Angelenos together to witness space history. The components of the two SRMs have an impressive legacy, having been used in 81 space shuttle flights, including 16 of Endeavour's 25 launches. The SRMs will be reunited with Endeavour and displayed in a vertical stack as part of the Science Center's permanent exhibits in the currently-under-construction Samuel Oschin Air and Space Center.
Students, community members, and space enthusiasts gathered to watch the SRMs on the final leg of their journey, reminiscent of the excitement that accompanied Shuttle Endeavour's arrival to the Science Center eleven years ago.

This past weekend, Angelenos embraced the vibrant spirit of CicLAvia. Over 7.8 miles of city streets were transformed into lively, car-free spaces. Individuals of all ages biked, walked, skated, and rolled their way through diverse neighborhoods, including the Arts District, Boyle Heights, Chinatown, Historic Core, Little Tokyo, and South Park.

LADOT is now accepting applications for new Crossing Guards. Crossing guards keep students safe traveling to and from school and help educate and instill safe, alert walking behaviors in young Angelenos. Our crossing guards are placed at schools throughout the city and help provide experience and judgment to help children navigate a school crossing, while also increasing the visibility of their presence to drivers.
