CicLAvia Celebrates Juneteenth In South LA
On Sunday CicLAvia opened up 6.2 miles of car-free streets in South L.A. on Vermont Ave. Thousands came out to walk, ride, roll, or enjoy the car-free route. Among the people enjoying the streets of South LA were Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass, Councilmember Marqueece Harris-Dawson, and Supervisor Holly Mitchell. The event also celebrated Juneteenth featuring Los Angeles County Supervisor Holly J. Mitchell's 3rd annual Juneteenth Celebration and Resource Fair which provided live performances, food trucks, and activities as well as access to community and county services.
South L.A has been a focus for many of LADOT's recent transportation investments with more still underway. In the last few yeares, LADOT has completed multiple projects in South LA that help to make commuting much safer and enjoyable.
- The Avalon Boulevard Safety Project repaired pavement, reconfigured lanes, and installed other critical safety improvements on Avalon Blvd between Jefferson Blvd and 120th St including 12 lane miles of protected bike lanes.
- The Watts Central Ave Great Streets and Safety Project recently completed traffic safety and accessibility improvements to Central Ave between Century Blvd and 108th St in Watts including bus boarding islands, landscaped medians, parking-protected bike lanes, and new pedestrian crossings.
- Currently in progress is the Broadway Safety Project. LADOT is about 75% completed in installing hundreds of safety treatments that include crosswalk upgrades, new and improved signals, intersection tightening, and speed tables among other treatments.
LADOT has also recently acquired over $100 million in grants for our South L.A EcoLab, our Universal Basic Mobility Program, and other corridor projects like Western Our Way and the Normandie Beautification project.
Metro Launches DTLA Regional Connector
Last week Angelenos celebrated the opening of the newly formed A and E metro lines and 3 new underground stations in Downtown Los Angeles. The DTLA Regional Connector ties together the lines formerly known as A (Blue), E (Expo), and L(Gold) lines taking it from three lines to two lines. The new A Line will run between Azusa and Long Beach and the new E Line will run between East Los Angeles and Santa Monica. The name L line will no longer be used as it has now become part of the A and E lines.
The project began nearly a decade ago in 2013 and has taken roughly $1.8 billion to complete. The new light rail lines share 3 new underground stations in DTLA; Little Tokyo/Arts District, Historic Broadway, and Grand Avenue Arts/Bunker Hill providing riders with a more seamless journey by reducing and in some cases eliminating the need for transfers. This new and efficient way of travel will transform how people across L.A. County commute to their jobs, schools, appointments, or even for just a fun day exploring L.A.

LADOT Staff DeJanea Williams Accepted Into The Women's Management Academy
We want to congratulate LADOT staff member DeJanea Williams for being accepted into the 2nd Annual Women's Management Academy.
The program is a partnership between the Personnel Department and Council District 6 and was first launched last year. The academy aims to provide insights and skill set building used in leadership/managerial positions with the goal of closing the gender gap within the City's management classification. DeJanea will participate in an 8-week course with classes running for 3 hours every Thursday. Congratulations DeJanea!
LADOT Now Hiring Crossing Guards
LADOT is now accepting applications for new Crossing Guards. Crossing guards keep students safe traveling to and from school and help educate and instill safe, alert walking behaviors in young Angelenos. Our crossing guards are placed at schools throughout the city and help provide experience and judgment to help children navigate a school crossing, while also increasing the visibility of their presence to drivers.
If you are interested in applying for a crossing guard position you can visit the website for the application and instructions on how to apply.
Participate in our Community Surveys:
You are the ultimate expert for your community. LADOT wants your input as we plan projects to improve the safety, sustainability, and livability of Los Angeles communities.
