LADOT Celebrates Play Streets Event in Pico-Union
On Saturday, June 10th, LADOT co-hosted a Play Streets event in Pico-Union on the streets adjacent to the Alvarado Terrace Park between S. Bonnie Brae St, W 14 St, and Alvarado Terrace. During this event, LADOT closed streets to traffic to transform the block into a place for play, relaxation, and conversation in support of healthy communities. This Play Streets event is the first six open streets events planned to take place throughout the City of Los Angeles.
LADOT partnered with the local Pico Union Neighborhood Council, Councilmember Hernandez of District 1, and California State Assemblymember Miguel Santiago of District 63 for this event to deliver programming that includes play, music, food, free bike repair, and neighborhood services. LADOT is committed to ensuring all Angelenos live in safe, vibrant, well-connected, and healthy communities as a fundamental livability issue for LA. Recognizing that safe streets and public spaces can form the heart of thriving neighborhoods; the City is committed to making sure these benefits are shared city-wide.

LADOT and Councilmember Hernandez Unveil Anti-Street Racing Measures in Angelino Heights
LADOT, in coordination with Councilmember Eunisses Hernandez and residents of Angelino Heights, has implemented safety measures along the streets of Marion Ave, Kensington Rd, Boylston Ave, and Bellevue Ave. The newly implemented safety measures are designed to prevent reckless driving in the neighborhood and improve the safety of residents.
Ever since the appearance of the Angelino Heights neighborhood in the Fast and Furious film franchise, a surge in dangerous street behavior involving activities such as speeding, intersection takeovers, car stunts, and street racing has disrupted the peace and undermined safety within the neighborhood. The recent treatments are designed to prevent dangerous driving behavior and include new turn restrictions, expanded medians, traffic circles, wheel stops, new crosswalks, and all-way stop signs. This new design helps prevent the types of driving behaviors that undermine neighborhood quality of life and pose a threat to those who use the street responsibly, while also facilitating safe and orderly driver behavior. The final design also incorporated requests from community members for improved access with new angled parking and dedicated ADA spaces to prioritize accessibility.
LADOT has installed street racing prevention treatments in neighborhoods across Los Angeles from the San Fernando Valley to Harbor City. This project marks the most extensive initiative yet in the department's effort to prevent illegal street racing to promote safety within neighborhoods. LADOT looks forward to continuing the partnership this effort has forged as we pursue future projects in collaboration with residents in Angelino Heights.
Wilshire Center-Koreatown Community Bicycle Audit Ride
LADOT recently partnered with People for Mobility Justice, Go Human, and SCAG for the Neighborhood Enhanced Network Visioning & Quick Build Project community bicycle audit and ride. The educational bicycle ride helped identify barriers and challenges to bicycling in Koreatown. They worked on identifying the best streets to improve for safe and comfortable biking to everyday destinations in Koreatown.
Neighborhood Enhancement Networks (NEN) projects, components of the City’s Mobility Plan 2035, seek to design and create a grid of neighborhood streets that provide for safe, convenient, and comfortable walking, bicycling, and scootering (rolling) to everyday destinations such as schools, markets, medical facilities, and recreation venues. The Wilshire Center- Koreatown NEN Visioning and Quick Build Implementation Project, funded by the Southern California Association of Governments (SCAG), will use a strong community-engaged centered process to help inform the street design and safety improvements for the project area defined by 4th Street (north), Pico Boulevard (south), Vermont Avenue (east) and Western Avenue (west).
Slow Streets Installation in Eagle Rock
This past Saturday, LADOT installed Slow Streets in Eagle Rock as part of the Department's efforts to create safer streets for everyone. Over the past few months, LADOT crews have been hard at work installing slow streets in neighborhoods across the city. Slow Streets use new traffic circles, medians, crosswalks, and signage to calm vehicle traffic, slow vehicle speeds, and make neighborhood streets safer for walking, biking, and all other users. These new Slow Streets permanent measures will help calm traffic speeds and promote a more active community in the neighborhood.

LADOT Now Hiring Crossing Guards
LADOT is now accepting applications for new Crossing Guards. Crossing guards keep students safe traveling to and from school and help educate and instill safe, alert walking behaviors in young Angelenos. Our crossing guards are placed at schools throughout the city and help provide experience and judgment to help children navigate a school crossing, while also increasing the visibility of their presence to drivers.
If you are interested in applying for a crossing guard position you can visit the website for the application and instructions on how to apply.
