New HAWK Beacon Activated in Pacoima
This week we joined Councilmember Monica Rodriguez in Pacoima to celebrate the installation of a new HAWK beacon at the intersection of Laurel Canyon Blvd & Mercer St. The pedestrian hybrid beacon or HAWK beacon is a safety improvement that allows people walking to cross higher volume intersections.
This treatment is located at an intersection where there was no prior signalization and sees a high volume of traffic due to businesses, a church, and residential areas in the vicinity. The signal is activated when pushed by a pedestrian. Flashing yellow lights signal drivers that a pedestrian is waiting to cross and they should slow down, red lights then require drivers to stop and safely allow those waiting to cross. Pedestrians are also given a walk signal notifying them when it is safe to cross.
HAWKs can be installed more quickly, at a lower cost, and at a wider variety of intersections than traditional four-way traffic signals making them a good solution to improve the walking environment in areas near major thoroughfares.
New Street Design Completed At PCH and Chautauqua Blvd
Our LADOT crews recently completed street treatments at the intersection of PCH and Chautauqua Blvd in the Pacific Palisades. The new street design restripes PCH and Chautauqua in order to make the intersection safer.
Before the project, PCH had two right turning lanes on to Chautauqua Blvd and traffic then had to quickly merge into one lane. After the project we changed that by removing one of the right turn lanes from PCH and creating a through only lane on Chautauqua Blvd. That means only one lane will be coming onto Chautauqua and there will be no more weaving of traffic, which should make the movement safer and smoother. We also were able to get some separation between the two lanes on Chautauqua approaching PCH that will help reduce last minute merging into the curb lane to go northbound on PCH.

LADOT Now Hiring Crossing Guards
LADOT is now accepting applications for new Crossing Guards. Crossing guards keep students safe traveling to and from school and help educate and instill safe, alert walking behaviors in young Angelenos. Our crossing guards are placed at schools throughout the city and help provide experience and judgment to help children navigate a school crossing, while also increasing the visibility of their presence to drivers.
If you are interested in applying for a crossing guard position you can visit the website for the application and instructions on how to apply.
