Venice Blvd Street Activation Celebration

Venice Blvd Street Activation Celebration

Over the weekend we joined community members, businesses, elected offices, and agency partners to the celebrate the completion of Venice Blvd Safety and Mobility Project. The transformative street redesign installed several miles of parking protected bike lanes as well as the first, 24-hour bus only lanes in the the city outside of Downtown LA. The days programming include guided biking tours of the new Venice bike lanes alongside music, games, and activities.

Nearly 47,000 people live within a 5-minute walk of the project area and an estimated 20,000 people daily board the Line 33 bus on Venice Blvd. With the completion of this project, Venice Blvd now supports a wider variety of travel modes making it safer and easier commute to jobs, social services, transit, and access community resources.

New Bill Introduces A Pilot Program Using Speed Safety Cameras

New Bill Introduces A Pilot Program Using Speed Safety Cameras

Yesterday LADOT joined CA State Assembly member Laura Friedman and Los Angeles City Councilwoman Nithya Raman in support the state Assembly Bill 645 (AB645). The bill, introduced by Assembly member Laura Friedman, would allow certain jurisdictions, including the City of Los Angeles, to conduct a five-year pilot program to evaluate the effectiveness of speed cameras in school zones and on streets with a history of crashes.

LADOT has pursued legislation that gives the department necessary tools for ensuring the safety of streets. A previous bill AB43 introduced by Assembly Member Laura Friedman and adopted in the 2021-22 legislative session made key changes to the California Vehicle Code that allowed Los Angeles for the first time ever lower speed limits on streets.

Excessive speeding remains a far too common occurrence here in Los Angeles. Data shows that a pedestrian hit by a vehicle traveling at 20 mph has a 90% chance of survival, while the likelihood of survival drops to only 20% when the vehicle travels at 40 mph.

Speed cameras already have proven effectiveness in reducing injuries and saving lives. The proposed AB 645 pilot program looks to assess the benefits of the use of speed cameras in school zones and on streets with a history of crashes. The data found will allow policymakers to make better-informed future decisions regarding road safety measures and the potential statewide implementation of speed safety cameras. The bill is also an alternative to traditional enforcement methods that have implicit and explicit racial bias putting drivers of color at risk during a traffic stop by law enforcement. With speed safety cameras, law enforcement resources devoted to speed prevention are reduced while creating greater consistency and accountability for driver to abide by speed limits on streets.

LADOT is thankful to Assembly member Friedman for leading the policy effort and to city leaders and advocates that support the promotion of transportation safety here in Los Angeles.

LADOT is ensuring that the opportunities and benefits from the electric vehicle revolution happening on our streets lift up our city's residents by funding training programs at LATTC. The EV training program certifies young technicians in the maintenance and safety of electric vehicles and prepares them for employment in this booming industry. We spoke with some of the students recently who shared their experiences with us.
