LADOT Responds to Heavy Rain to Support Safe Travel Across the City

Over the past week, LA experienced more heavy rain storms which resulted in flooding, debris flows, and road closures at various points throughout the city. Traffic officers alongside Special Traffic Operations and partner agencies have responded to emergency events over the past week to ensure the safety of residents and road users.

Commuters should be aware of a long-term road closure in place on Mulholland Drive extending from Laurel Canyon Blvd to Beverly Place to the west of Coldwater Canyon. Currently there are hard closures in place between Skyline Drive and Summit Circle as well as between Beverly Place and Split Rock Drive. Other portions of Mulholland within the closure area are for limited local access. The map above shows locations where closures are in place along Mulholland Drive.

Motorists should use alternate routes and avoid canyon roads wherever possible over the coming days and weeks. Road users should also exercise extreme caution when traveling in the area to allow crews space and time to remove debris and mud from the roadway.  Crews also responded to closures in the Sepulveda Basin along Burbank Avenue, Nichols Canyon, and Beverly Glen.

Traffic officers have been stationed at various intersections throughout the city to help navigate road closures and keep a smooth flow of traffic along the slick roads. Crews continue to assess and respond to reports of potential mudslides throughout the city. We would ask that all residents and commuters obey traffic officer instructions at all time as they respond to ongoing closures and safety concerns related to the storm. 

We know that rain can create dangerous situations on the road as well as some travel inconveniences. Here are some best practices to use when driving in inclement weather: 

• Heavy rains can cause power disruptions to traffic signals.  Remember to treat all dark or flashing traffic signals as an all-way stop. Proceed carefully in intersections.
• When driving, please slow down and carefully watch for traffic officers directing traffic and people walking and biking, who may be less visible in heavy rain.
• Watch for high water and never drive into flooded streets.  Just six inches of water can cause loss of control and possible stalling for most passenger cars
• Drivers should exercise extreme caution on the roadway, drive slowly with headlights on, and leave extra space between themselves and the vehicles being followed. 
• Pedestrians and bikers should also practice caution as inclement weather can severely limit visibility. If traveling by foot, bike, or other means, travelers should wear bright reflective clothing so as to be more visible to other road users.

Los Angeles Prepares Celebrations for Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day and The Kingdom Day Parade

On Monday, January 16, 2023, the city of Los Angles will commemorate the life and legacy of  Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. at its annual Kingdom Day Parade. Community members, civic leaders, and city residents all turn out to celebrate. The parade route will along Martin Luther King Blvd between Normandie and Crenshaw. Street closures for the event begin as early as Monday, January 16, 2023, at 4 AM. Those traveling can expect delays and congestion in and around the event area.We also remind you that Monday will be relaxed parking in observance of the holiday.
