COVID-19 Efforts and Guidelines
As our local communities continue to experience the ongoing effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, the City of Los Angeles and LADOT request that residents and visitors observe all city and county health guidelines aimed at combating the spread of the virus. This past week, to achieve this end, the County of Los Angeles instituted multiple safety measures, including more stringent customer capacity limits for people visiting businesses, restrictions on multi-household gatherings (with certain exemptions for outdoor political or religious gatherings), and closures of playgrounds not affiliated with schools or care facilities. Outdoor recreation areas remain open with the provision that users maintain a distance of six feet from others and that all recreation participants wear facial coverings.
In support of Los Angeles’ COVID-19 response, LADOT continues its traffic management efforts at six virus testing sites throughout the city, and maintains its assistance at 40 grab-and-go food locations to benefit local students. LADOT Transit continues to provide transportation options for essential travel for Angelenos with safety provisions in place, details of which may be found by clicking here.
With the city facing a resurgence of virus cases, LADOT reminds Angelenos to observe safety protocols — such as frequent hand washing and the wearing of facial coverings — and to refrain from unnecessary travel outside the home. As the COVID-19 public health emergency develops, the department will continue to adapt and expand its work to encourage and ensure the safety of all in Los Angeles. Continued Support for LA Al Fresco
The LA Al Fresco program has been a lifeline to Los Angeles restaurants during the pandemic, with over 2,000 restaurants permitted to-date. While outdoor dining is temporarily suspended, LADOT continues to process and approve applications for LA Al Fresco to ensure restaurants can resume outdoor dining operations as soon as County restrictions are lifted.
Restaurants that have already received a permit do not need to reapply. However, businesses interested in the program can apply for authorization at corona-virus.la/laalfresco.
Building a Better Broadway
This past summer, LADOT took the first big steps toward a larger vision for improvements on Broadway by initiating construction to provide a safer and better connected street for all. Between 2009 - 2018, 34 people were killed or severely injured while traveling on Broadway — 59 percent of whom were walking or biking — which in turn led to this heavily used street being categorized as a priority corridor in the Los Angeles Vision Zero High Injury Network.
Since the launch of project construction, LADOT crews have implemented improvements such as new street markings, new protected bike lanes, street repaving, new bike lane bollards, and signal timing modifications. In October, to showcase these new improvements, LADOT collaborated with the office of Los Angeles City Council District 8 Councilmember Marqueece Harris-Dawson to host local community members for a community bike ride through the Broadway project zone. And more recently, this past month, LADOT crews continued their work on Broadway by implementing the newest round of street improvements, which included the placement of green road markings to delineate bicycle lanes, parking zones, and turning zones. In the upcoming weeks, additional safety and maintenance work will be added on Broadway between Century Boulevard and Imperial Highway, which will include lane reductions, a new protected bike lane, new curb paint, and pavement repair.
