LADOT Supports Emergency Operations and Recovery During Tropical Cyclone Hilary

LADOT Supports Emergency Operations and Recovery During Tropical Cyclone Hilary

This weekend as, Tropical Storm Hilary approached Los Angeles, Mayor Karen Bass issued a local emergency declaration so that the city could coordinate resources and make the necessary preparations for the first-ever Tropical Storm alert to be issued for Los Angeles.

As the storm hit Sunday, the city experienced heavy rainfall resulting in dangerous flooding and other impacts to roads such as debris flows, downed tree limbs, and signal interruptions due to loss of power. Traffic officers originally scheduled for CicLAvia worked alongside Special Traffic Operations and were deployed to various locations throughout the city to support storm emergency operations and recovery and  Emergency signal repair crews addressed traffic signal outages in real-time. LADOT Transit services also provided transportation to bring LA's unhoused residents to shelters where services were made available to help people find more permanent housing solutions.

Thanks to the extensive preparation and partnership with other departments such as the LAFD, Public Works Department, LAPD, and others, Los Angeles was able to return to normal operations soon after the storm's passage.

At this time we want to remind Angelenos to report any damage such as fallen trees, potholes, or mudslides to 311. We want to remind you that the best way to stay safe during any kind of emergency event is to stay informed. You can sign up to receive emergency alerts on your phone at the Los Angeles Emergency Management Department website

LA Celebrates The 50th Anniversary of the Bicycle Advisory Committee

LA Celebrates The 50th Anniversary of the Bicycle Advisory Committee

Today the Los Angeles City Council celebrated 50 years of the Los Angeles Bicycle Advisory Committee. The BAC was first established by Mayor Tom Bradley in 1973. Its 19 members are chosen by the fifteen Councilmembers and four of them are chosen by the Mayor. Since its establishment, the committee has been instrumental in advancing the bicycle as a means of recreation, as well as a means of transportation, in the City.

With the guidance and support of the BAC, we have built nearly 1300 lane miles of bike facilities in LA, and have been able to complete major projects such as the LA River Bike Path. LADOT also relies on the BAC for its insight and feedback on bike lanes throughout the city including ones that need maintenance and repairs.

Throughout its existence, the Bicycle Advisory Committee has helped lead our city to adopting more and better bike facilities to ensure that biking in Los Angeles remains a safe, convenient, and joyful mode of transportation.

Our crossing guards are placed at schools throughout the city and help provide experience and judgment to help children navigate a school crossing, while also increasing the visibility of their presence to drivers.

If you are interested in applying for a crossing guard position you can visit the website for the application and instructions on how to apply.
