Celebrating the Completion of Phase I of the Hollywood Safety and Mobility Project
Last week, I joined Councilmembers Hugo Soto Martinez and Nithya Raman to celebrate the completion of Phase I of the Hollywood Blvd Safety and Mobility Project! All of us at LADOT are extremely proud to deliver a project that reflects the input of thousands of community members who live, travel, and work along this corridor, who participated in surveys, town halls, and pop-up engagement events.
The first phase of this project redesigns over two miles of one of our city’s most famous streets, from Gower to Hillhurst, by adding protected bike lanes, a center turn lane, and new crosswalks and pedestrian improvements. Since 2010, more than 50 collisions along this stretch of Hollywood Blvd resulted in serious injury or death. By making it easier and safer to turn left, dedicating space for people on bikes and scooters, and increasing visibility for pedestrians, this new design will reduce the severity of traffic crashes and make the street more enjoyable for everyone.
As we celebrate this accomplishment, I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to everyone who played a part in making this project a reality. To our dedicated LADOT team, our community partners and local stakeholders - your collaboration and hard work has been invaluable. We look forward to continuing this project in future phases to make Hollywood Boulevard easier to access and safer to travel on for all Angelenos, no matter how they choose to travel.
CicLAvia: Meet the Hollywoods Showcases New Hollywood Blvd Bike Lanes
Last weekend, CicLAvia joined East and West Hollywood with over six miles of open streets on Hollywood Blvd, Highland Ave, and Santa Monica Blvd! CicLAvia events close streets to vehicle traffic and open them up for all forms of people-powered mobility: walking, biking, boarding, blading, dancing, and more.
Participants at Sunday’s CicLAvia were able to explore the new bike lanes and other safety improvements along Hollywood Blvd. LADOT staff were on hand at two of the hubs to answer questions, hear feedback on the project, and run a scavenger hunt with a limited-edition pin as a prize.
Open streets events show us the amazing things that happen when we prioritize streets for people, not cars. Thanks to all who stopped by to tell us why you love the new Hollywood Blvd, and thanks to our LADOT Traffic Officers and Special Traffic Operations team for another fantastic CicLAvia.
Be sure to mark your calendar for the next CicLAvia event on Sunday, September 15: CicLAmini Lincoln Heights! Visit ciclavia.org to learn more.
Mayor Bass, LAUSD, and LADOT Celebrate One Year of School Safety Investments
This morning, LADOT joined with Mayor Karen Bass and LAUSD Superintendent Alberto Carvalho to celebrate over one year of new school safety measures. In May 2023, LADOT initiated the largest school safety investment in our City’s history. To date, the program has completed the following:
- Implemented street safety projects in the form of “quick build” street improvements at more than 180 intersections at more than 40 schools
- Installed more than 250 speed humps near 92 schools where speeding is a known issue
- Established School Slow Zones with reduced 15 mph speed limits on more than 450 street segments adjoining 190 schools.
Traffic collisions are the leading cause of death for children between the ages of 4 and 14 in Los Angeles County. These school safety treatments will help prevent speeding and other unsafe driving behaviors that put students’ lives at risk.
In addition to these investments, LADOT expedited the hiring of crossing guards for the 2024-25 school year. LADOT now employs 527 crossing guards to staff key locations and intersections near schools, representing the largest crossing guard deployment in over a decade.
Thanks to Mayor Bass and Superintendent Carvalho for your commitment to prioritizing traffic safety for students as they head off into the new school year!

Stay Cool During Summer Heat
As temperatures stay high during summer months, keep these tips in mind to remain cool, safe, and comfortable:
- Stay hydrated and remain alert for signs of heat-related illness like dizziness, fatigue, nausea, and muscle cramps. Check in on your household, family, friends, pets, and neighbors.
- Do not leave young children and pets unattended in personal vehicles for any period of time. Cars interiors can reach lethal temperatures quickly.
- The City of Los Angeles has hundreds of cooling centers open in the form of Recreation and Parks facilities and local library branches. To find a cool spot near you, visit the Cool Spots LA map online or download the app.
LADOT bus services, including DASH and Commuter Express, are air-conditioned to keep you comfortable as you travel this summer. Additional safety tips may be found on the Los Angeles Fire Department’s website. For safety information in additional languages, please visit the City’s Heat Relief Outreach Materials.
