Update on the Latest Venice Boulevard Safety and Mobility Project Progress
We are making progress on the new safety and mobility improvements on Venice Blvd. StreetsLA has repaired and refreshed the pavement on Venice Boulevard, and the LADOT crew is out on the streets to complete the rest of the mobility improvements. Through Spring of 2023, LADOT will be working to upgrade existing bike lanes and crosswalks, and partnering with Metro to add new dedicated bus lanes on Venice Boulevard. We will also be adding a new protected left turn signal at the intersection of Venice and Hughes in the Summer of 2023. The project schedule has been moving at a slower pace than anticipated due to the amount of unprecedented rain this winter season. Pending any additional storms we expect Phase 1 of this project to be fully completed by June 2023. Below is an overview of what’s been completed, what’s still in progress, and what’s to come.
- Completed to date:
- Striping removals in preparation for the new street design.
- Pavement repairs to prep the street for the new street design
- Currently underway:
- Lane markings and crosswalk striping
- Installation of bollards (plastic posts)
- Upcoming:
- Bike lane and bus priority lane signage and pavement markings
- Final adjustments to parking spaces, meters or loading zones
Please be aware of all posted notices in construction areas and other changes in your surroundings while this project is in progress. You can visit the project website for updates at ladotlivablestreets.org/projects/venice.

The Founders Of the 100-Year-Old Restaurant “El Cholo” Are Dedicated An Intersection
Last week LADOT honored the founders of the El Cholo restaurant - which celebrated 100 years in service this year - with a dedicated intersection. Alejandro and Rosa Borquez Square is located at the intersection of Western Avenue and 11th Street near the original restaurant located on Western Avenue just south of 11th Street. Attending the ceremony were the founders' 90-year-old grandson, Ron Salisbury, the chief financial officer of El Cholo Restaurants, and a great-grandson of the founders, Brandon Salisbury as well as City Councilwoman Heather Hutt; and singer Michelle Phillips. Los Angeles is home to many historic locations that have stood the test of time. LADOT looks to honor and highlight that history with commemorative signs and designations like Alejandro and Rosa Borquez Square..
The Borquez family opened the restaurant in 1923 with the name Sonora Café, named after where they’re from in Sonora, Mexico. In 1925 the name was changed to El Cholo after the founders were inspired by a customer who drew a Mexican field hand on the paper menu. For 100 years now, El Cholo has been a hub for students, families, and celebrities embodying the Los Angeles culture serving people of all ages and all backgrounds.

LADOT Now Hiring Crossing Guards
LADOT is now accepting applications for new Crossing Guards. Crossing guards keep students safe traveling to and from school and help educate and instill safe, alert walking behaviors in young Angelenos. Our crossing guards are placed at schools throughout the city and help provide experience and judgment to help children navigate a school crossing, while also increasing the visibility of their presence to drivers.
If you are interested in applying for a crossing guard position you can visit the website for the application and instructions on how to apply.
