Powering LADOT’s Fleet Electrification and Sustainability Goals with Innovative Software Solutions

LADOT is rapidly electrifying its transit fleet to meet sustainability goals set under the Green New Deal for Los Angeles. To meet the particular demands of these new zero-emission buses, the department has developed a unique partnership with GMV Syncromatics and ViriCiti to develop a state-of-the-art fleet management and maintenance system that will provide real-time dispatch and bus status information. LADOT will equip all of its 160 new e-buses with software to improve bus performance by measuring bus efficiency, ridership, and bus arrival-departure timing. Improved fleet performance data will provide valuable and actionable insights as LADOT looks to continuously improve its transit services as it moves to achieve a fully-electrified fleet by the year 2028.

Through its partnership with LADOT, ViriCiti provides access to real-time bus notifications, such as electric vehicle charge levels, bus location, speed, idling, or any issues a bus may have. All data transmitted pertain only to a given vehicle, and no passenger information is collected. Using ViriCiti’s Smart Driving technology, LADOT will improve driver training and better understand where common traffic incidents, like harsh braking, are taking place on the road. The software is also able to interpret a driver’s direct influence on trips with external factors such as weather or passenger load also taken into consideration. This information can then be used for training to increase efficiency, safety, and passenger comfort.

Partner organization GMV Syncromatics has also supported the electrification efforts of LADOT since the department received its first electric bus in 2017. GMV’s technology provides real-time route information from buses when they are on the road, allowing dispatchers to ensure their vehicles are completing routes in a timely fashion.

Caltrans District 7 Los Angeles is developing an active transportation plan and needs your help! Place pins on the department's online survey to let Caltrans know places where walking routes, biking routes, and public transit access along or across the state highway system can be improved upon.
