Latinx Heritage Month

LADOT acknowledges the importance of building partnerships with communities to create an inclusive and equitable transportation network. Many of these partnerships join LADOT alongside community-based organizations that work to support historically underserved Los Angeles communities and groups including those in majority Latinx communities. This Latinx Heritage Month, LADOT is recognizing some of these organizations and how they have partnered with LADOT to improve the lives of within communities of our city.

Through the years, we have worked with Pacoima Beautiful to implement more infrastructure that serves Angelenos. Pacoima Beautiful is a grassroots environmental justice organization that provides grassroot education, impacts local policy, and supports local arts and culture to promote a healthy and sustainable San Fernando Valley.

In 2015, Pacoima Beautiful collaborated with LADOT through the Peoples Street Project to create Bradley Alley Plaza. This project is part of LADOT’s people streets program, which transforms city streets into livable and accessible places for Angelenos. Bradley Alley Plaza is designed to be a multi-functional play, performance or passive space.

This organization continues to actively work alongside LADOT to implement safety features that help create a better transit network. “The collaboration between Pacoima Beautiful and LADOT benefited people by bringing traffic calming measures such as the protected bike lane on Van Nuys Blvd which has served to slow down traffic and make the street safer for cycles in the community.”

Finally, Pacoima Beautiful helped co-author LADOT’s recent Changing Lanes gender equity study. This landmark study was a first of its kind from a major transportation agency to determine how to better meet the needs of women who depend on transit. Through this study, the department is working on creating strategies to shape transportation to increase women’s mobility so that we can better support access to opportunity .
