We’re getting to work on making permanent upgrades to some slow streets networks. The program began during the pandemic to provide additional space for recreation within neighborhoods. While the original Slow Streets program used temporary materials, we are now working on making improvements permanent to calm traffic on neighborhood streets making it safer for residents to walk and bike. Over the weekend installation began in neighborhoods in Koreatown and Hollywood and more installations are on the way.

LADOT joined Councilmember Kevin de Leon and the Bureau of Engineering for the groundbreaking of new pedestrian crossing safety enhancements coming to Olympic Blvd in Boyle Heights. These improvements were advocated for by the community and funded through the Highway Safety Improvement Program.

LADOT launched its University Basic Mobility Pilot, yesterday in South L.A to reduce barriers that restrict mobility for Angelenos. The pilot combines accessibility to current transportation options as well as new options and expanded services for shared mobility, fare subsidies through our partnership with LA County METRO, and new electric charging facilities. This program invests nearly $18 million in state and city funding to bring transportation options to South L. A and is one of the largest programs of its kind in the country.

Last week Dodger fans filled Dodger Stadium for the first home game of the season. This is the 60th anniversary of the iconic LA stadium. LADOT operations helped the opening day crowd have access to and from the stadium. For home games, LADOT encourages fans to use public transportation to get to and from the stadium on time and avoid traffic congestion. This year marks 5 years since the installation of pedestrian and bicycle safety elements on Foothill Blvd that have resulted in a 100% reduction rate in fatal collisions. This weekend LADOT joined Streets are For Everyone (SAFE), and the office of Councilwoman Monica Rodriguez to install a community-funded memorial in memory of Jeff Knopp, a father, husband, and veteran who was struck by a vehicle and killed while riding his bicycle on Foothill Blvd in 2016.
